Eastern Washington pheasant hunting report

Today conditions were perfect. A couple inches of fresh powder for tracking. No wind. Cool enough to not over heat the dogs but warm enough I had to shed a coat after an hour of walking. Roads weren't too bad with the fresh snow for the trip to and from the hunting grounds. Tracked several birds in the snow. Only saw one rooster that flushed at least a hundred yards out. Saw two hens, one flushed right next to me. Katy the wonder dog tracked a bird for several hundred yards through the sagebrush. I tried jogging to keep up with her. Never did get a look at it. Got into a covey of quail. Brought two home.

What a great report. So often we get the glory shots but not much detail. I'm guilty of reports like that. I got out today too and it sure was beautiful. I love to hunt fresh snow. I saw more pheasant tracks than birds. Kind of eye opening how many birds I never see but are there or were just there recently.

Alex, great report; it reflects my average hunt these days. Late season roosters love to run. With some quail, Huns and a grouse in the freezer, I feel fortunate and shock of shock, bird hunting never has been about limits with me anyway. Alone with my Springer in the beauty of the snow covered Palouse satisfies my needs. Anything put in the game bag is a bonus.

what kinda details you looking for??

I just liked how he shared some details. ie the weather, some stories about how the day went, what the dog did, ect.

I love to see the pictures and don't mind when people are brief, just something struck me about this report and I liked it.

Also, there isn't always much activity in the upland forum so sometimes I like to make sure somebody who makes the effort to post gets some response.

Maybe I shouldn't have complimented him?

Dec 5th..... Nice day wind was good and it was sunny.  Worked the wind and did pretty good.  The morning was a little frustrating with lots of birds flying wild but the afternoon it settled down and the birds held really well.  The dog did very well today working with the wind in his face....man its nice to watch dogs work birds..

It would be sad if I didn't get birds but watching the dogs is one of my favorite things about hunting birds!

Got out today...Some birds were flushing wild while others you had to step on them to get them up. We got 3 roosters and 10 or so quail between three guys.

BIG bummer of the day...my pup took a face full of porcupine quills near the end of the day. On the hike back with a face full of quills she was still able to point two more times, one being the last rooster of the day. Nice day, bad ending

Also, went out yesterday...  Weather was very warm making fields very muddy and not ideal.  Then started snowing sideways so hard to see when hunting against the wind...  BUT as always nice to get away from the pavement of the city and watch the dog worked, he pointed a few hens the roosters were getting up to far out...

Do yourself and your dog a favor and carry a multi tool or some hemostats so you can do a quill extraction in the field.  I haven't had a situation yet where I couldn't get all of the quills out myself.  Your dog will feel better and so will your wallet.

Very much agree with the hemostats. They have been a lifesaver numerous times and not just for the porcupine quill.

I carry a full dog med kit, had to use some yesterday on a barb wire cut across the front of the leg....

I got all but one out. Last one broke off under the skin. But yes should have had the tool on me.
