Beautiful Day - Recreational Shooting
« on: March 04, 2016, 06:19:08 PM »
Got my chores done this morning and it was such a nice day - I really wanted to go shooting.  The only problem was the wind - not real bad in town but I know at either farm it would be much stronger - so I decided to head to the Rock Pit - it is somewhat sheltered from the wind.

I took my Mountaineer - I really do not shoot it that much anymore, not really sure why it is a very good shooter and easy to shoot.  I also bought a new bullet the other day at Sportsman's WHSE.  I was looking for some Sierra .458x300 Pro Hunters.  This is the bullet I normal use to replace the Sierras when shooting for the fun of it.  A few years ago I again made the switch from Hornady Bullets - I just have no faith in them as it seems at any given time you can strip the lead right out of the copper jacket.  This aversion lead me to Sierra and looking at the different Sierras I found the 458's (45-70 rifle bullets) and started using them - the best part they are a real rifle bullet and are a proven big game bullet.  Well, the WHSE did not have any but they did have a couple boxes of Sierra .4515x300 Sport Masters, I went ahead and bought a box and since I had them I really wanted to shoot them and see how they flew.

Got to the Rock Pit and got everything setup for the shoot I was really planning on shooting a target also but it seemed to get lost in the moment.  I set up 8 Clay Pigeons on the Rock Wall at the end of the pit loaded up and started shooting the birds.  After I completed shooting the birds - which was great fun and also re-enforced that these bullets could-would and did shoot very well.

After shooting the birds - I then started working on chips that I could find in and on the rock wall.  Before you knew it I had shot several more shots clearing the wall of chips.  And by the time that was over - it was time to head back to town - so no target got shot.

One of the other things - it was a great afternoon and a very inexpensive and rewarding afternoon of pure recreational shooting.

Here is a few pictures of the events.... O the added picture of the Whitetail in Hog Meadow Creek - is really important!!!  I have been to the Rock Pit on several occasions this spring and have not seen a single deer and this area usually has a heck of a lot of deer.  But, last fall the deer took a huge hit with Blue Tongue disease occurring during the hunting season.  These 3 deer were very young but it was really good to see them...

Keep shooting muzzleloaders - They are a blast!!
