Anybody had their dog kicked by a deer?
« on: November 19, 2015, 08:17:13 PM »
Out running my English Setter today in the woods near our house. At one point he started acting funny and seemed like he had something caught in his mouth. I figured it was a piece of wood or dirt and figured I'd look at it closer when I got home. A few minutes later he was clearly having a problem with his mouth so I took a closer look. Crap! His gums were bloody and it looked like his teeth and jaw were smashed.  Look like somebody hit him with a mallet. Wife took a look at him (she's a dental hygienist) at told me to get him to a vet right now. By this time, the vet was closing but they recommended I give a pain med and bring him in in the morning.

So now I'm racking my  brain trying to think of what could have happened to him. The damage was too severe to think he just ran into a branch or something. I wondered if it just happened or maybe it happened earlier in the day. I asked my wife if the dog was around the horse where she ties him up every morning. Then it dawned on me, could a deer do that if the dog went into full chase mode? My dog missed the class in doggy school about not chasing game animals. I've seen him try to take out a deer by jumping on it like a lion. I can see why a deer would defend itself with hooves.

So, question...is that a possibility or would you think a deer would never allow a dog to get that close in the first place. Anybody else have a dog/deer interaction?

Hope your dog comes out ok.

My lab got it once from a doe in the yard, after that she would not leave the porch without me if a deer was in the yard. If I tried to get her to bark at the deer she would just ignore it like it was not there. One day I was coming back from a walk, she came running up to the fence and then saw a deer in the yard and immediately headed back for the porch.  So I am pretty sure she had a bad run in with one of them.
Another time I saw the neighbors little yappy dog being chased back into it's yard by a deer.

So yes, they will kick doggy ass.

Had one get the *censored* kicked out of her for me being a bad owner. Now I always educate my dogs. Current dog knows right from wrong as it started at a young age with a shock collar and training around animals.

Seen horses kick the crap out of dogs as well.

Had my little 12 lb bichon in the Blues in Oregon at my grandparents place one year.  There were 3 deer in the yard and he went after them.  I yelled after him to stop but when he's after something he doesn't care.  He disappeared up the road behind some trees and as i'm running after him and yelling, he comes FLYING back and right past me.  The momma had turned around and chased back but stopped short of me or he might have got his azz kicked.  I have seen youtube vids of dogs that didn't pull up in time, and yes... deer can do some serious damage to a dog.

Sounds more like the horse to me, once he heels up see how he reacts around the horse (scared, skittish, etc)

Just got him back from the vet. Three teeth had to come out and some reconstruction of his jaw. Hope it doesn't affect his ability to smell. I'll watch his reaction around the horse but neither he or the horse have had any issues up to this point. But it would be entirely in his character to take off after a deer. If that was what happened, I hope he learned his lesson.

Wow! After watching that, I'd say my dog was lucky to only have lost a few teeth.

Out rabbit hunting in Alaska my dog and I ran into a moose and my dog learned it's not a good idea to mess with  moose. He got kicked in the ribs and luckily it was a glancing blow. But he still had sore ribs for quite a while. After that he he'd growl at them (He was a husky and didn't really bark, he'd howl and growl) but he wouldn't get close to them, even when they came into our yard.

There were a couple of Weimaraners that got badly hurt after an angry momma deer stomped on them when I lived in the Midwest I believe. It was at a NAVHDA training day, wrong place, wrong time.
