Anti-bark collars

I have a quick question about anti-bark collars.  I know there are basically two kinds.  Shock and the citronella spray ones.  Which one is more effective on average.  Another point is the humaneness of shock collars.  Any info would be appreciated.

I wore my buddies shock collar once and he zapped me, they are effective! I almost pissed myself, his dog just looks at a remote and knows to listen.

The thing with a shock collar is that my dog knows when its on adn when it isnt.  If he isnt wearing it then he acts accordingly.  Put it on and he behaves without having to use it.  Mine had a beeper on it so you could beep instead of shock.  Didnt use the shock part too much, used the beep part mostly.

My dog doesn't bark when we're home.  He would only have the collar on when we leave him alone.  Hopefully after a few zaps all we have to do is put it on him and not even turn it on.

If your talking about the no bark collars they are humane and very effective.  I have no experience with the citronella spray ones.  But don't buy the cheap ones, get the $99 Tri Tronics.  Your dogs will normally only test them a time or two and will not bark once they are on.  I have used them on knuckle headed hounds and they were quiet as nuns in church when they were wearing them and their normal loud booming selfs when you take them off.  Once thing is you cannot just put them on and leave them on, the nodes will rub their necks raw.  So I normally put them on when I leave my place because they know Dads gone and they won't get in trouble for barking.  I take them off when I'm home because I can step out and tell them to hush and they listen.  I put my guys up at night so they are quiet anyways.

I have both shock collars and anti bark collars. I advocate using them. My dog doesnt bark until I put him in the kennel when I am off to work. Since I started the anti bark collar I have not had one complaint from the neighbors about his barking. Get the type that has adjustable voltage. Don't go cheap. You don't have to have the voltage very high to be effective. My dog loves it when I put on his shock collar as he knows we are going into the outdoors. It was the best investment I ever made with respect to my dog. Some people say it's inhumane and I suppose so if used incorrectly. But I can't afford to have my dog go chasing after a bear or deer and come back wounded on not come back at all. So buy the anti bark collar you will be happy you did.

I have a no-bark collar and it works great.  I don't have it on the dog all the time but it's nice when you want some quiet or when company is coming over.  Also, if you want to leave your dog at a friend or family members house and the dog barks constantly, it will stop that.  Like the others said, they will test it once or twice and then they will not bark at all after that.  Mine knows how much wimper she can get away with and will still make sounds but not barks.

I also have the regular hunting/shock collar with silent beeps.  I use the silent beeps for most everything.  I rarely have to ever shock.  Maybe once a year when she gets testy and tries to be slow at the commands or ignores me.  Dogs have a high pain threshold.  My dog practically ripper her ear off and kept hunting for birds.  If I ripped my ear off I'd go cry to mommy.  So testing it on yourself means little.  That being said, they do hurt and are fun to play with if you have buddies that aren't real smart.  Usually, alcohol is involved.  My dog does not like a 2 out of 5...  Keep in mind if they are wet from swimming, the electricity conducts better and lower the setting to a 1 or .5 shock.

my female lab is the same way all i have to do is show her the remote and she listens , i never had a problem with her barking , i just got a new yellow lab he is only 10 wks old , and we shall see if he is a barker , when i put him in his crate at night he tends to be noisy but i yell NO a couple times and he is out for the night , the shock collar was the best investment i made for my dog , it took 2 or 3 shocks to her and she was the best dog i could ever own now i dont even have to put the collar on i just show her the remote , before she was all jumpy and always running off at the lake one time we were at the lake and she went and snatched a steak off a ladys plate  that same day i met a couple there with there choc. lab and they had a collar on their dog , they told me i should get one and you will see improvements instantly so i marched home and went online and ordered one from cabelas it worked awsome for my dog she is preety behaved now , i dont even have to have her on a leash around other dogs now or at the lake  she knows better now and now its training time for the new pup

Humaneness check, Put collar to your own neck, set to lowest level and administer a shock, it is very slight. Then slowly ramp it up to the highest level, now the question is if you were a dog where would you stop barking/pay attention at? What im trying to say is even the highest level isnt going to kill you or permanantly injure you. Lets just compare it to a police grade tazer. it takes 50,000 volts of electricity to arc across the two electrodes, but once the electrodes have attached to the skin only 11,000 volts are going through the body. If the taser has been deemed humane, a shock collar sure as hell is.

I bought a bark collar from WallyMart and it worked great until the battery ran down. It had four settings. The first time he barked it would be a minor shock and each time thereafter it would progress up to the next level. I never had the balls to try it on myself (luckily the thought of trying it never occured while alchol was involved), but my wifes sister put it on and tried it while I was at work  . The first one just tickled, so she laughed and got the second level, and then she said something she shouldn't have and got the third one. Her dumba@@ had strapped it on and she had undo the clasp to get it off. My wife did say after the third one she was quiet though  just wished I would have been there for that one.

Currently I have a Dogtra 2000 T&B (train and beep) that has the beeper caller built into it. All I have to do now is beep my boy and he knows to listen or shut up cuz what comes after the beep he is not going to like.
