My wife is Lauri Miller. I dont want to sound proud, BUT so far not many have been able to match her numbers for over wintering or queen rearing. She has more knowledge than anyone I have run into so far. Sorry for the late response. I have been busy and havent been here for a while.

My buddy and I are getting into the hobby. I'm sort of sorry he went and ordered package bees instead of nuc's. Anyway we'll  hope for the best. Don't know how easy it is for a couple noobs to screw up and hopefully we won't find out.

Look up and follow her Facebook page. Miller compound and honey bees. If you bought packages you should re- queen. Call also. She has a lot of info to share.. Definitely worth the time. 253-843-1319 Lauri.

So why would you buy a package and then immediately requeen?

To be assure to get good stock that is tolerant of our weather and pesticide free. Not sure where your nuc is coming from. A lot in our area come from California. Very low survival rate if that is the case. More work than necessary to keep alive.

Thanks everyone for all the replies, I decided I just wasn't quite ready to go for this year and didn't want to rush to make it happen. I'm going to wait till next spring, however I do have some of my gear and would like to continue expanding my knowledge . That being said ...anyone near Buckley that would let me tag along while they work their hives and show me some ins and outs?

i know i am a little late but another idea is get some bee boxes and post an add on catching swarms.. most people will even pay to have them taken.. we get called several times a week to come get swarms.. just an idea of a bit cheaper way to start some hives..
