Blacktail + douglas fir = blacktail
« on: December 14, 2015, 06:14:08 AM »
I've seen some great bucks the last few weeks, but was never able to get a shot off. Last night I saw a slob of a buck as I came off the hill after dark, so I decided to go back this morning.

It started snowing and I was going to hang out for another 45 minutes and take down my stand so it didn't get snowed in for the winter. I had rattled earlier, so I decided to give it another try. About 10 minutes after I rattled this little forked horn came slipping through. I thought he going to come in front of me from right to left, but he angled up and behind. I had to let him go by before I could get drawn and shoot.

Cool picture! I'm going to try rattling more next year in the late season. What kind of broadhead with the traditional set up?

Thanks guys!

As far as the broadhead I use.  I've been hunting with the 125 gr 3-blade Wensel Woodsman heads for 15 years, the last batch I bought is actually the Woodsman Elite.  Same basic cut on contact head.

Thanks for the info. I'll check into these. I have a bunch of Bear Razor broadheads given to me by Justyhunter. They seem to fly well but I haven't been able to shoot any deer with them.

Beautiful situation.

Must have been a curious bugger to respond to rattling in mid December eh?

I've seen some real mashers the past week too.  I must be getting old cause they have all been faster than I have been :chuckle:  Maybe I should finally learn how to rattle.  Never done it much.  Sounds like fun!

Congratulations!  One of H-W's members I always look forward to seeing post this time of year.

You shooting cedar, ramin or fir?

Also, I noticed your shafts are footed.  Are you doing those yourself or buying them complete?

Thanks again guys!

I can't say for sure that he responded to the rattling, may have just been going from point A to point B?  But I saw a big buck the night before that was bird dogging a doe right at dark, so there's still unbred doe's out there.  I've rattled in bucks as late as January 6th before...so you never know!

You shooting cedar, ramin or fir?

Also, I noticed your shafts are footed.  Are you doing those yourself or buying them complete?

I build douglas fir arrows.  Still have some cedar stashed away, but the Surewood douglas fir shafts are far superior to the POC these days.

I do have a footed arrow in my quiver, but used a solid doug fir arrow on this buck.  I got the shafts from Ted Fry in Hood River, make three for myself each summer.  These were douglas fir footed with wenge.  I just bought a jig to try making my own 4 leg footed shafts, but will have to wait till after the holidays to play with it.

These are the footed arrows I made for myself last summer...

I also made several dozen for a local fella...

Yes, had to wait for the buck to cross from the right behind me to the left...too awkward to shoot to my right.
