funny turkey hunting story
« on: February 05, 2009, 12:57:01 PM »
i was just thinking about this and would like to share.i cant remember the year but it was in the mid 90s.i had a client coming in for a 3 day hunt. he was an attorney from pittsburgh. i had been scouting an area above the hartstown swamp in crawford county pennsylvania. i had taken my bird there on opening morning. and i knew there was a big boy on that hill. so i was up there the evening before and roosted him. i watched him come in just before dark and fly up into an old hemlock. all alone i was pumped for the next morning. my client arrived on time at 4am. he wanted his hunt on video so i had everything ready. we slipped into the area by 5am all set up.as it started to get light on the horizan the tom let out a thundering gobble.i got out my wing and scrated the tree a bit and let out a few very soft tree yelps. he thundered again. so then we were just quiet . because he knew where we were. he gobbled and gobbled. when i thought it was light enough i hit him with a wing flap and a fly down cackle. after a frenzy of gobbles i heard him pitch down to the ground. so i told my client to get ready. the tom was hot gobblin and gobblin . i saw his white head moving thru the trees always reminds of a light bulb. camera on i let out a few yelps . here he comes, bang bang, bang. off he flew. the client jumped up and was what happened. now the funny part all on tape he walked out to where the bird had been turned around thru up his arms in disgust when suddenly in the back round 3 saplings fell over like dominos i could not stop laughing. so just remember when your drawing the bead on that toms head look ahead for obstrutions.     thanks   strut
