Duck Calling 101, where are the good YouTube video's?
« on: December 16, 2015, 04:05:31 PM »
I am new to Duck calling. Wondering if anyone has YouTubes (or other video's online) they recommend? I see many out there, but don't know who teaches the "killer calls".

Thanks!
Craig

Less is more when learning. What kind of call do you have? Most calling is based off the basic quack. Start with that. If you can get a nice soft & loud quack down  you have the most important step down IMO. You can soft quack nearly anytime while hunting and not screw up birds working. When I was first learning my hunting buddy was teaching me. Once I got the quack down I helped his expert calling by filling out the sounds.

Moat important thing is to know when to call. I've heard some live hens sound terrible, so you don't have to sound like a comp caller to kill ducks. Also know that some ducks just don't respond to calls very well. Pintails for instance usually don't respond to a regular duck call. But a pintail whistle works well, as well as mallard drake whistles.

Probably the most underutilized cheepest call is the 6in one whistle. Stupid easy to learn. And great if you can identify on the wing. Mallard drake pintail feel widgon the whole shebang

Duck calling is a weird art. Any video will be a good start. Learning to read the birds is what I find more important, then blowing perfect sounds.

The Echo duck calling 101 cd is a good starter to listen to in the truck. Being in the field and seeing how the ducks respond to your calling is a big part of the learning curve.  Never call ducks that are overhead call on the corners. If the birds are doing what you want them to do without the call then don't call.

BGC Double Nasty. It is pretty nice. Have worked with some cheaper ones and see the point now of spending a few $ http://buckgardner.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=77

What I found most helpful when learning was just a lot of practice. All calls are different so different mouth sounds may sound better or worse depending on the call. Some people use the 10, 10, 10, some use hum, and some calls dont need much mouth sound. I use an echo poly timber double reed and it is by far my favorite call. Easy to make quack sounds or hail calls as well as feeders. It used to only be around 50 but I havent looked in awhile.

echo makes good cheap and expensive calls....buck gardener makes a decent cheap call to. I agree to the less is more aspect. if you get the ducks attention that's all you need..just a few quacks.
