arrow setup help please
« on: December 22, 2015, 11:13:18 AM »
New bow showed up yesterday, and I imagine Santa will bring me most of what I need to set it up, so I need to start getting some arrows together.
My last bow I ran 400 spine got tip hunters (or expeditions, now I don't remember for sure), cut them to size at sportsmans and screwed in some 125g field points, it out shot me for sure.

I think I want to put a little more effort into my arrows this go round, still plan on running gold tip huntes, but I'm not sure about adjusting foc, or what length I should run.
New bow is a 2014 bear anarchy, draw length is 30.5"/31" depending who measures. Want arrows to pull double duty, gonna start shooting at 60#, just to get some practice in and make sure I get my form back to what it was, then I will probably go uo from there.

Plan on running mechanical heads for turkeys most likely, though not set in stone. Fixed heads for everything else.
What length should I have the arrows cut at?  With long draw and higher poundage I was thinking of running 300 spine arrows this time, which according to charts puts me over spine ay 60#, seems like it's somewhat of a non issue to run arrows this way for a short time, but I might be way off on my assumption.

Is there any way to figure foc and have any weights I might need virtually, so I can have everything ordered at one time?
Thanks for any help!

I've never worried about my FOC all that much (I shoot with my arrows wrapped and 4 fletched) but if that's the road you are wanting to really go down, just realize the heavier spine will translate into heavier shafts. That will mean with the higher GPI of your shafts you'll have to put even more weight up front to get what you want. I'd suggest figuring out how heavy of an arrow you want and what FOC you want, then look at shafts that will get you there. If you choose heavy 300 spine shafts then start after chasing the FOC you may end up with a heavier arrow than you want.

As to what length to cut your arrows to, that can be a personal preference thing. Mine are cut to the front of my riser, some guys like to have the broad head further away from their hand than that.

So am I maybe over thinking it? Some charts I've read call for a 340 spines arrow, others call for a 300, I was thinking of leaving my arrows a touch long, as my last bow had arrows that were cut right almost even with my rest which I didn't care for as much. I was thinking 30.5-31" on them, which is a pretty long arrow, leading me to think a 300 spine and foc would be more important.

I'd hate to drop money on arrows and realize I needed to put in weights and be stuck with them.

Lots of manufacturers have arrow configuration on the websites, gold tip comes to mind. It figures foc and total weights. You should be able to get most component weights, check Lancaster archery, they usually last weights of vanes, nocks, inserts, etc.

I have made the mistake that you are worried about.  Purchased a new bow and got 300 spine arrows and were under spine. For your set up I would go with 300 spine arrows.   I cut mine same length as draw length for extra weight.  I also added 56 grains up front with 100 grain head.  You can use archers advantage online.  It's like $10 a year and helps with all that info.  If you don't want to buy it, give me your specs and I'll run it through.  It shoots out everything from sight tapes to arrow weight and all that.  If you have the 70lb limbs backed off to 60 and plan on headed towards 70 in the future I would 100% get 300 spine.
