Goin out this morning. . .
« on: January 23, 2009, 06:26:12 AM »
I'm heading out to my friends house to hunt some yotes this morning. . .I should be set-up and ready to go by daybreak and will have a couple of hours to hunt. . .

. . .the coyotes hit her neighbors chickens yesterday morning between daybreak (7'ish) and 9 AM so they are back to their old games again and I'm hoping to nail one or two!!!

I'll let you guys know how it goes. . .

Just got back. . .no luck at all. . .no coyotes, not even any crows!!!

BUT. . .I did figure out why I haven't had ANY luck the 8 times that I've been to her house. . .her house is like a Jack in the Box. . .it's good for a quick and easy meal for the local coyotes whenever the opportunity presents itself. . .other than that they aren't messing with it. . .not rocket science right. . .but I figured since they had been hitting the chicken pens so regularly and nothing bad had happened to them that they might be easy to entice out into the open around the pens. . .and I had no luck. . .

. . .I found out why today because I tried to set-up inside the super, ultra-thick brush around the property to call them to me without asking them to leave cover and still no luck!!! Turns out on the other side of that nearly impenetrable brush that's about 75-100 yards deep is what I believe to be the "Ultimate Wet Side" coyote terrain. . .it's a HUGE semi-cleared area with patches of brush. . .a marsh, TONS of deer tracks. . .some access road/trail of some sort going through it that the yotes & deer seem to be using to move from one spot to the other. . .like I said I saw a TON of deer tracks, and I found some coyote tracks, but better yet I found a couple of fresh coyote piles with what looked like rabbit fur in them. . .plus this area looks down on the property that I've been trying to get them to come onto so those *censored*s have been able to see every single thing that goes on without me ever having a chance to see them!!! I'm gonna talk to my friend and make sure that the owner of the property behind/beside her is OK with me being out there for sure. . .I've been told that all the neighbors (who all have poultry) are sick & tired of getting raided and are VERY happy that I have been coming out despite the fact that I haven't killed anything. . .so I'm just gonna double check. . .

. . .I'm hoping this area will produce. . .it looks very promising. . .enough cover to make the yotes feel secure, but not so much that I won't be able to see them with my new .22-250 which will be scoped and sighted in by the end of the weekend!!! Watch out song dogs. . .next weekend I'm coming after you!!!

I don't have an e-caller. . .and don't I have a woodpecker distress call or know if they make one or know if I can make one with my mouth calls. . .I got in  and set-up in the brush close to where they had drug a couple of chickens in there. . .I waited about 15 minutes to let things calm down and then I opened with a female invitation howl. . .I waited about 5 minutes and then I started with rabbit distress calls. . .I did about a 45-60 second distress and I would wait a minute or two and then do another distress series. . .after about 25-30 minutes of this I waited another good 5 minutes tried another more aggressive barking howl. . .waited 5 minutes and tried the distress series again. . .I was on stand for about 45 minutes total. . .

. . .I had to be somewhere so I didn't really have time to do another stand but I had always wondered what was on the other side of the brush line and I had just enough time to find out and I'm glad I did. . .I talked to my friend and she said there was no problem hunting the land on the other side of the brush so next time I'm gonna try to set-up just inside the brush line at the upper corner of the lot so that I can see the entire plot. . .the plot slopes gently downward from where I will be set-up and I will be looking at a clearing with scattered clumps of trees/brush in front and to my left with a marshy pond to my right and the another brush line farther to the right of the right of the pond. . .I will have about 400-500 yards of mixed clearing in front of me before the brush picks up again. . .I'm hoping this will turn out to be the area where I can finally see a coyote that I have called in and shoot it instead of only seeing fresh tracks after I leave without ever seein the yote!!!
