Scoping a Springfield Model 1903 : Anyone done it?

Looking at putting a scope on my Springfield Model 1903. Has anyone done this before? Does it work well and what is the best scope for the configuration. The rifle was my Grandfathers, he had the stock cut back previously. Have no interest in dollar value of the rifle sporterized vs. unsporterized and would love to use it for hunting.

Is it a 1903 or a 1903A3?   Difference is the 03 has a ladder sight out in front of the receiver.   The 1903A3 has a peep sight on the rear of the receiver.   If it's an A3 half your drilling is done as the mounts utilize the rear peep sight screw hold.

There's a mount available like what's in the picture someone included.   If you elect to get the receiver drilled for a conventional set of bases pay attention to the fact the 1903 series of stocks were made for 5'9" shooters shooting offhand.

Good luck on getting it scoped.  I have 3 with scopes.  Two were drilled and the other is a 1903-A4 action that came "factory" drilled as it was intended as a sniper rifle.  I only have the action.

The Springfields are good shooters so have fun once you get it scoped.

Thanks Bill! I am going to dive into it over Christmas, If I remember I will post up some pics. The gun is fun as heck with the ladder sight. Really smooth action.

That is sweet looking. I'm going to put a modern scope on mine but that setup is beautiful !!! Love the stock!

I did some searching on these and found a video of the install, it appears it uses the ladder sight holes for mounting the rail then weaver style rings. But everything I have found shows the scope mounted farther forward than I would like in a "scout " position? Anyone have experience with these mounts , can the rail be turned around to allow the scope to be more of the traditional position?

I like the idea of no drilling / no mods to the rifle.... I suppose I could call S&K....
