Tired of my calls rattling against one another!!!
« on: January 24, 2009, 12:16:46 PM »
I HATE it when I'm on the stand or trying to quiet and sneaky on the way to a stand and my calls rattle against each other. . .

. . .on the way into a stand I usually keep them inside my coat and they are nice and quite, but then they are a PITA to try and get out of there without moving too much or them rattling against each other!!!

If I leave them out on the way to the stand they constantly rattle against each other!!!

. . .does anyone have any suggestions on how to keep them quiet???

I'm thinking of going to the Sportsmans warehouse and finding some neopren gloves and snipping the fingers off of the glove, snipping the tip of the glove finger off and using the neoprene sleeve to go over the barrel of my calls. . .I think that will keep tem from rattling as long as the neoprene is big enough to fit over and tight enough to stay put. . .

. . .what do you guys think???

I'm an archery guy, so I'm very familiar with MOLE SKIN. I use the camo Mole Skin and put it on the outside of my calls. They still bang together at times, but its not the loud noise. GOOD LUCK< SHOOT STRAIGHT.

I use an old sunglass (neopreanish) carrying case. For the most part, it works like a charm. I usually carry my big howler in my side leg pocket, the rest of them in the case, I think I have about 4 or 5 in the case, one around my neck, the howler...all set. ;)

Good luck with it

I've got one of those, but they still rattle against each other. . .

. . .that moleskin sounds like it would be a good idea though

Cabelas sells a camo choketube case with semi hard sides and a zipper. It has elastic loops inside. Works great!

tie them to the lanyard  so they physicaly cant  touch each other.you end up with some calls hanging in front and some down your side and back  but they wont make any sound
you cant eat the horns, but backstraps look like crap on my wall!!!!

I use the 'removable'-type camo tape, and wrap a couple layers around- not for the camo, but to dampen the sound.  Even this isn't perfect, as you can't cover the mouth end. It was available.  I use that camo tape (of the elastic style commonly used for wrapping injuries), on almost anything.  I wrap my shooting sticks (part way at least), and even my already-camo rifle barrel, because I could see a shine off it in bright light.
Live all you can: It’s a mistake not to.

pm your address and i'll make a couple Lanyard's they wont hit each other.some call's the sound might get deadend. i only use Landyard's. i carry a closed Reed or two when bear calling. coyote's closed Reed. small  openreed and larger openreed. sometime's Howler. plus my custom wood call's dont Rattle. take only what you need to a stand. doesnt take much to let them know your around. smart critter's. KIS brother... I carry two calls around my neck... and another in my pocket. Those two calls are the Bearmanric Magnum Squeaker (which my 2 year old called a coyote with the other day) and my Critr-Call... if it can't be done with those two it don't need doin'. The one in my pocket is an AP-6... but since I got the Mag. Squeak from BMR... it hasn't seen the light of day.

You ain't even killed a coyote yet... so why in the hell do you need a lanyard full of calls? Pick one... like an open reed from Rick... or hell even an AP-6 or a Critr-Call... it'll make all the sounds you need for now ("I'm hurt eat me blues", "pup stomp romp", fightin' howl, etc)... and it won't rattle against another call ('cause that other call ain't there).
Strike Hard...
Strike Fast...
No Mercy, SIR!

Thanks for the advice guys. . .

. . .I haven't even been able to go out since the beginning of the year. . .I was the project manager for a single seat race buggy that we were making at school. . .I was doing 15 hr. days working on the buggy until last weekend (race was last weekend) to get it done in time. . .it sure was fun, but I had no life outside of the welding shop!!!

I'm ready for a break. . .I've got a bunch of catching up to do with vehicle maintenance, house chores, and the ubiquitous "honey-do" list. . .after I get a little caught up I'm gonna try to head out every Friday morning since I don't have school on Friday's and the GF has work. . .

Thanks again!

+1.  I pack a Sceery howler and a Primos "still" cottontail.  Keep it simple or you'll be switching calls to often and second guessing yourself all day.  I figure that they will either come to challenge, food, a combination of the two, or not at all.   I killed 58 'yotes in a winter with just these two calls.  :twocents:

I really don't carry that many calls guys. . .I carry at most 3 usually only 2. . .I'll cut you off before you say it though, I know that everyone has the Primos calls and the dogs have probably heard them and are wary of them, but that's what the sporting goods store had when I was just getting into this and hadn't found this forum yet. . .that being said here's what I have and what I carry. . .I have a the Primos Lil' Dog (the one with two different mouth peices), the Primos Ki-Yi, and the Primos Hot Dog. . .I ususally only carry the Lil' Dog (with only one mouth piece) and the Ki-YI. . .I think the Hot Dog is good howler and is easier to howl with than the Lil' Dog, but it's also really big. . .the only time I carry 3 calls is during crow season and I keep a crow call with me in case I don't see any dogs and I get bored of waiting (happened quite a bit last winter. . .plus one of the people whose land I hunt on wants every last crow gone because they keep eating here chickens', ducks', and geese' food). . .

. . .I do plan on upgrading to some different calls. . .probably BMR's based on what I've read on this forum. . .or an e-caller. . .it would be really nice to have the sound away from me some. . .especially here on the West Side. . .

Thanks again for the advice!
