What's your farthest hit on a target?
« on: January 02, 2016, 08:42:18 PM »
Doesn't have to be an animal, but what's your longest range hit on a target? I took my brother in law out yesterday and sat him down behind my 284 striker for the first time and he was able to a 12" rock 3 out of 3 shots at 672 yards. It was his longest shot/hit ever and he was pretty pumped.

My best consistent hits are at 36" targets at 2386 yards with a rifle and 18" targets at 1475 yards with one of the pistols. There were a few other shots beyond 2800 yards but those were at nearly 5 foot targets and any hits were almost entirely luck!

I found a spot today to set up targets at over 3400 yards so that's the goal once the 338 Big Baer is up and running.

I prefer double digit yardages.  That being said, the longest shot ive ever attempted at anything, even counting paper, was 350 yrds at a bear.  Normally i would have closed the distance, but i had about 10 minutes left before i was done bear hunting for the year.  Clean kill, she was delicious too.  Used a 1956 win model 88 with a 150gr core lokt psp and a vortex diamondback hp scope.  Bullseye.  Was it ethical to take a shot at a live animal at a range i wasnt accustomed to?  Some will say no, but i was comfortable with the situation, and the proof is in the pudding.

Does your 308 have enough energy left at 825 yards to ethically hit a piece of saw blade steel.

P.S.   825 yards off hand for me would have to be pure luck   (for me....   I'm not impugning your skill.    I sure couldn't do it.     )

It was pure luck. We could take off our muffs, smoke a cigar and have a shot of Jack Daniels if we wanted too, then hear the ding...It, not it, I was impressive to the guys who shoot monthly. I was a little rusty on that day for sure.... :dunno: Normally, I use a mirror and shoot off my shoulder, like Annie Campmeat used to do. I WAS, the coolest guy there, all day long..

I sense a spoil sport! And obviously my shots are better than everyone else's! Bango's shot with a Winchester 88 is impressive. My father in law has one that's minute of barn beyond 50 yards but always seems to kill critters! Any shot with a 308 is impressive. I've never had luck getting one to shoot well past 400 yards.

Most  of my best witnessed shots aren't at impressive ranges. I've made a few lucky one time hits at unknow distances with random holdovers that I'll never repeat. One of my best was hitting my 10" gong with a 480 Ruger super RedHawk at 300 yards. I hit it one time on my first try and it was witnessed by 4 guys. I never even came close with the rest of them. I should have stopped after the first one!

You would have to ask the long winded experts, those would be the ones pointing their fingers at what they call the "Self proclaimed experts" and then you would have to debate or define the true definition of foreign steel because American Union made steel is a complete separate issue in itself when compared to imported Chinese or Japanese steel. I'm sure they will chime in. I'm not a "Ethical Expert".
