New Trapper Winging It
« on: January 09, 2016, 11:08:49 AM »
Well so far I trapped 2 coons at a buddys house and a beaver off the river. My ? Is  should I set my trap back on the beaver dam. Could there be more that one there? Had my traps set for 4 day off the river and nothing. The trap was set on the other side so no one could see it. On Monday I pulled the traps. As I boated down I seen beaver sign off a small side channel. The beaver was cutting on a tree and was fresh. So I reset the trap off to the side or the tree.  Well I caught one. It is not big but my first beaver. I skinned him and fleshed the hide. Now my ? Is Would you vet-trappers set up there again? The night I pick her up the tide was down. There is 3 or more big dams but there. I think there might be more than one here but I don't know. Hope to get more and now I have bobcat bait. Heading out now to reset and put out 2 land traps and a hancock and check it tomorrow. Thanks for reading. I will keep you posted.

I would certainly set it back, most likely more than one.  Nice job!

That's the first time I remember seeing a picture of a Hancock trap on here. Did you have it under the alder in the picture above? My friend has one we keep meaning to set, but haven't yet. Nice job

yep just tucked it to the left behind the tree. Went back today and set a cage trap just across the dam on the other side and placed the hancock on the other dam. Will see if I get anymore

No not yet.  Going to use the beaver meat for bait. Planning on taking the body out and nailing it to a tree and Place trail cams.  Thinking of waiting a week and then check cams for cats. Then place 2 traps with the rump and front shoulders of my beaver out and will see. At least thats the plan. Lol cross my finger.

Well the tide was low nothing in traps. I found the main trail off the dam. So I reset one trap in a pond off a trail on the other side of the dike. The hancock trap resented and camoed it more off dam. Also checked otter sets but nothing. Will see tomorrow if i have any luck. Here are some more pictures.

First pic is the land trap I set yesturday. I moved it after I found a nice trail. The 2nd or 4th is the new spot off a pond. The 3rd and 5th is the hancok trap off dam in slough and I broke the dam a little bit but I don't know if it will make a difference. Wanted to set right on trail, but trap is to big so I set off to the right  20 ft away going in another pond. Camo'd it good. Hmmm the last pic is my boat and where I trapped the my first beaver next to the tree. The dams are 50 yards apart. Will keep you posted.

Looks like a good area. Seems like the tides would be a pain? :dunno:

yea it is a pain but I am trying to work with it. The only good thing is that I can set off the dam because the water leave at low tide is still the same and at high tide the trap becomes a drowning set but I don't knoe if the sent washes away. So I set the trap 3/4 down so the sticks and sent won't be under water at low tide. I will try this 2 more days then I have to pull them and let the area suttle down for a week.

Do you put your Hancock in the water, or on land?

Well had 4 traps out for 4 days off the river. All 4 days empty ever time. Hmmmmm Saturday seen some fresh sign on a tree off the main river and over bank by the pond.  :dunno: but nothing since then. Seen a muskrat in pond but I don't have a trap for them. I will let the area suttle down for a week and I will try my luck on bobcats with the meat from my first beaver.
