Book Recommendations

Hi All,

Does anyone have any good book recommendations regarding hunting Elk or hunting the NW in general?

I am leaning toward Westside, but I have not committed yet.

I realize this is for elk, but I think you should read Boyd Iversons "blacktail trophy tactics 2"  it will help you greatly for deer and since its so thick I think some of it applies to elk on the wetside. Trail cams and scouting are key.

I checked out and read a bundle of deer and elk books from the library in years past while trying to figure out how to be a successful hunter - don't overlook that resource.

Older book but the book 'Elk Talk' by Don Laubach and Mark Henckel was a good read and I think I will go into my first rut archery elk hunt this year better off for having read it. Even if you aren't planning to hunt in the rut there is a lot of good info in the book about elk habits throughout the seasons and hunting tactics to use

You didn't say which season you'll be hunting. If early archery or muzzleloader, a great book to have is Elknut's Playbook.

Maybe check to see if there are some hunting related forums. The ones I know about talk primarily about football and politics.

go spend time with them . get elevation and wind advantage and close the distance . never expect them to come to you. if you make elk sounds and have wind and cover you will be surprised how close you can get . jim horn Jr has some good cds that help you understand elk talk and like others have mentioned elk nut.

I recommend every Washington hunter read Ralph Flowers' The Education of a Bear Hunter.  In addition to lots of great info, it is a great look back to the western WA of yesteryear.  I think it is the hunting analogue of Haig-Brown's A River Never Sleeps.
