Best powder for 17 Hornady Hornet
« on: January 13, 2016, 10:22:29 PM »
Ordered an EABCO 24 inch Contender barrel today after waiting a year and a half for a couple Eagle View Arms barrel stubs so that I could fit up a couple CZ 527 takeoffs I have sitting around in 17 Hornet and 22 Hornet for my kids.

When I called yesterday the guy running Eagle View finally admitted that they are not going to ever get the stubs into production.  I don't have any junk contender barrels either or we would have just used one of them for a doner stub.

I have a 5-20 BDC Nikon Monarch and a 3-15 EBX Nitrex TR2 sitting around and plenty of 17 calibur bullets, so as soon as I get a set of 17 Hornet dies I am set.  The reticles On those scopes are heavier than I like, but will be fine for the kids to use for shooting chucks out to a buck and a half or two hundred.

Depending on how this one shoots I will probably just order a 22 Hornet barrel from EABCO and a 7-30 Waters too.  That way when my daughter gets a little older I will have a deer rifle ready to go for her.

I'd start with Lil' Gun and H110. My went down the 22 hornet path at one point, Lil' Gun was the go to powder. His only regret with the gun was he'd of rather it been turned into a 22 K-hornet.

I'm using Lil' Gun in the Hornet (CZ 527) and it is head and shoulders above all others.  I use H110 in the 44mag and so I have both on hand.  Thanks.

Off topic.....what's the deal with the barrel stubs? What are they, what purpose do they serve, etc?

Barrel stubs are really a great way to make up a Contender barrel and this guy was producing them from scratch.  That made it so you did not need to go scrounging fro a bad Contender barrel.  And make no mistake about it there are a LOT of bad Contender barrels floating around.  It seems that they had a problem with crooked chambers on the ones I saw that would not shoot.  Also there are things like 357 Hot Shot that there is no ammo for so they made good donors too.  It is a shame that Lowell could just not locate a CNC shop that could get them out at a price that was in the right ball park.  We had six on order with him.  I actually think he has a few Encore stubs still available.

Good Morning;

I just wanted you to know that as of this morning Eagle View Arms is taking a rest until early summer. We will maintain our FFL and still transfer firearms for our customers but the EVA Stubs and 5MM products are not available until further notice. I need a rest and some time to get things figured out. I can not go on promising things that I can not deliver. The last quotes for production of stub and magazine parts that I received matched or exceeded the amount that we sell them for. We are shipping all the current orders out before this weekend.

I have not quit but need time to figure out how or if we can continue.

Until then, I am going coyote calling and getting the shop back in order.
