Go to your profile and click on "account related settings" on the far left. You will need to know your password but just go to where you see name and change it then hit "change profile" at the bottom.

To change the username or display name (they are different) requires a global moderator or admin. I don't want to get into the habit of having to field requests to change people's username or display name all the time. Consider registering the username you want.

Yes but either way it will require a global moderator or admin priveleges. Your instructions above will not work for them unless they have the correct permissions.

I can change your name. But make sure your email is up to date so that you can receive the re-activation email. Lots of people have mail servers which black hole the emails from the forum. This is when it becomes even more of a chore than anything else. Then send me a private message.
Also - yes you can just register a new name and stop using the old one.
On top of that - this topic is covered here in this board previously.
