6.5x47 Lapua Savage Pre-fit?
« on: January 17, 2016, 03:20:49 PM »
I'm looking at turning my savage 243 into a 6.5x47 Lapua. I have a hogue overmold stock with the full length bedding block. Going to get a rifle basix trigger. Just need to decide on a barrel.

Looking for reccomendations on savage drop in barrels.

I'd like to find someone that will do a savage drop in with a tighter neck tolerance to avoid working the brass. I think a 0.293" neck would be about right. I'd like to be able to achieve 1/2" moa or better and keep the cost somewhat reasonable. If money wasn't an issue I'd get a stiller and have Gordy Gritters put a top notch barrel on it and slap it in a mcmillan or manners with a jewell trigger.

Anyone used the X-caliber barrels? I have a #5 contour blank in 6mm 12-twist. Was going to do a 6x47 Lapua but now I'm thinking I'll go with the 6.5.

Thanks!

McGowen barrels should be able to do a barrel as you described.

The X-Caliber barrels are top notch quality if you do decided to use the 6mm blank that you have. McGowen can have one made for you pretty quick. I have a few McGowens and they all easily shoot below .5 MOA.

Thanks for the info. The barrel outlet lists their reamer specs on the website. Looks like theirs is a 0.294 neck. I may end up going this route. I'm going to check with x-caliber and see what theirs is.

I'd  go the 6mm route but I originally got a 12 twist thinking I wanted to push some light bullets fast...since decided that I'd rather get something that will shoot the  high bc bullets. So don't think I'll be using the 6mm barrel that I have.
