Remington 700 Long Range .25-06
« on: January 19, 2016, 10:18:52 AM »
Picked up a new to me Remington 700 Long Range in .25-06 from a fellow member last night. (Thanks for the smooth transaction by the way. Woody_65 is a stand up guy to deal with.) It's unfired. I figured I'd start this thread to detail the life and times of my new rifle. I'm on a budget so I will try and use the best quality stuff I can afford without going completely overboard.
I picked the rifle up last night. The scope should be here any day now. It's a Leupold Vari-X II 6-18x40 with M1 turrets installed. I bought a EGW 20moa rail and Burris Extreme Tactical low rings. I guess I didn't need the 20moa rail, but I opted for it so it's there if I do need it. I have the rings here but the rail is still inbound. This will be my first dive into the long range game. I don't have any hopes to have a 1000 yard rifle, but if it works out ok, that's fine. My hope is to have a solid 500-600 yard hunting rifle.
Updates to follow.

Well, full disclosure. The sign on the store says $25.00. We were charged $20.00 a piece. I wasn't sure if that was a mistake or whatever, but I didn't want to say they were $20 not being sure if they actually were all the time.

That should be a fun one to shoot, with it being a relatively heavy 25/06, recoil should be virtually nothing. Will you be shooting factory ammo?

Shouldn't be too hard to make this one shoot.   I bought a Rem 700 Varmint Special in .25-06 in the mid-80's and it's been my "go to" antelope rifle for Montana.  I shot a couple of antelope in the 425-450 yard range using a 1980's era Bushnell BDC rangefinder scope.  I lucked into a load combo that shot under .25" by accident.  It started under .50" but didn't have the velocity I wanted. Never use a chronograph if you can't stand the answer.  I kept upping the powder charge and the groups got larger and larger until they were at 1.0".  The next increase landed on a "node" and the groups shrank down to almost nothing (for a hunting rifle).

Only thing I did to my rifle was adjust the trigger.  It was hard to find a sour shooting Varmint Special in the 80's.   Let's hope you get the same results with your new one.

Bullet choices are better now.

I will for now, but am working on assembling some reloading equipment so I can do it myself at some point, hopefully soon.

$20 a piece? Did you trade him a firearm too?

Nice rifle, by the way! I have a 29"pacnor 25-06 AI custom. Very accurate.
