new mexico help
« on: January 05, 2016, 07:43:22 PM »
So,
I am moving there this summer. I know I will pay out of state fee's, but thats fine.
I would like to hunt pretty much all of it. Ibex, elk, deer, elk... All of em.

Problem is... I can't figure that place out. Me and the wifey don't really care about drawing top of the line tags, but would like a reasonably good hunt from a probability stand point to get our feet under us this yr.

I read the draw reports, but all it shows is percentages, draw numbers, and filled tags. I can't tell you which is a masher bull/ buck unit, or which is more of a high chance of success hunt.

Any input, experience, or suggestion would be appreciated.

Thanks,
WB

The area from about Taos north to Colorado is good.  Think it was unit 4 (but memory is sketchy).  The Los Alamos area has some big ones, but I think there are big, private ranches kind of in the middle of the unit that are surrounded by the national forest--the herds like to run down to the pastures.

Rifle muzzy or archery? For elk they have some units that aren't open to rifle like 15 which would be good. NM looks at your first 3 choices before looking at the next applicants choices. So you should swing for the fence with your first choice for sure. A little more info on weapon type would help.

Thats some killer critters!
I prefer to guide myself though.

I hunt with rifle and bow. Mainly bow though. Especially for elk.

I worked there a few years.  The guys I know that hunt public land elk hunt in the Gila National Forest.  Not sure the unit numbers and pretty sure they wouldn't tell me.  Some of that is rugged country.  Gila Wilderness is pretty gnarly.  The tribes down there have big bulls on their reservations.  But that will cost a lot of coin.  Good Luck.
