Toyota Tacoma lifts?
« on: January 24, 2016, 11:46:03 AM »
I recently bought a 2007 Tacoma and am going to be putting a lift in it. I was wondering if anyone could share a picture of your lifted truck.I was thinking a 4 inch lift because a 2 inch seems kind of pointless and six inch seems like too much. But i don't know for sure but anyway here is a picture of my truck.

Here's mine with 33s...what size tire are you wanting to run? That will determine what size lift you should get....33s and 2-4" would be good...35s and a 6" is a must

Not sure on the older Tacomas, but use Rev-tech leveling lots on the newer truck. 285's fit nicely

I would highly suggest staying with a 3inch and 33s if your lifting it. I've driven the 6inch 35's and they don't drive as well and lack power. I'm in the process of changing my wheel berrings right now in mine, not sure if the lift had something to do with it but I will be keeping my next truck stock I think with upgraded aggressive tires.

If you get 35s you need to regear it....I have plenty enough power to smoke the tires with 33s...I also have a locker and haven't needed 4wd yet

Before you decide to lift, and the height you want, do some serious research. It's not just about looks or tire clearance. Depending on your suspension system you can get into serious, and expensive issues like drive shaft and pinion angles, u-joint wear, vibrations, steering geometry, brake line length, alignment problems and others. As a rule, the higher you lift, the more each of these become something you will have to deal with. It can get real expensive, real fast once you start correcting the geometry problems that a lift produces.

Can't lift a Tacoma more than 3" without a drop bracket. Do not use a spacer lift like revtek. Only lift to do is a coil lift, look into eibach or OME lifts.

It came on the truck but it looks to be 2-3"... And it's plenty for me...I wanted a little more clearance with bigger tires without needing to climb into the truck...I've had a Toyota with a huge lift and 37s and it got old climbing up into it

I am thinking of going with 32" tires because they look good on my dads full size chevy with leveling kit so i figured they would look even better/bigger on the Tacoma.

Here's my old Tacoma. Eibach springs which gave me about 2.5 inches. I later switched out to Old Man army 885 springs which gave me 3 full inches. Another thing to consider is getting upgraded upper control arms to help keep alignment in spec. I went with Light Racing arms. Also a 2 inch add a leaf. 285/70/17 tires. Really liked this setup.

This.
You see a lot of Tacoma mall crawlers with lift kits.
I wouldn't have one.
I had to pretty much rebuild my 2006 Tacoma suspension and even with 2", there are geometry issues to contend with.
Do not use a preloaded shock to lift it...all you get is a look with rough suspension and less travel.
I used Old Man Emu springs (removed the third leaf on the rear pack to reduce the lift) and Bilstein 5100 shocks set with no pre-load.
Rides great on and off road, doesn't look silly and not much hum and vibration.
Also, you can save a ton of money ordering out of state and picking items up at ARB in Tukwila.
Ask me how.

You may want to check with Auburn Car Repair & Off Road since they are close to you. They did my 2" lift & no issues 58K now. (OME Tacoma Suspension lift kit)

For you guys with Tacomas I highly suggest saving this link for wheel bearings in the future. Especially with lifts and oversized tires. This guy makes the whole assembly unit that you just have to bolt on instead of having a shop press the old ones out/in. Saves you from the dealership doing it for 700 a side. I'm doing mine now at 125,000k.

To the OP, look at this thread about what happens when guys lift even only leveling kits. Tacomas have a known needle bearing issue in the front diff that can really cause headaches. Just a good informational read. All caused by lifts

As a current Jeep owner (and three other 4x4 trucks) I can garnfriggintee the quickest way to open your wallet is to start dinkin with the suspension geometry. It can be done successfully, but it is rarely easy and it usually opens a can of worms at some later point in time. I don't want to discourage anyone doing it because there are advantages of doing it, but.....just be warned.

Thanks for information everyone. I think i am going to do the leveling kit and new tires when my tax return comes in and see how that looks and that should give me time to do more research and determine whether i want to go any further. I may just get steel bumpers and get my winch mounted instead of any lift.I know i wont be going any higher than a 3inch if i get one.

Have fun with whatever you do. I just had mine done this last summer. I did the front and back. I was nervous about just a leveling kit causing the front end to be higher when towing and using the bed of my truck. Here is a pic of mine.  Whatever you end up doing post a pic so we can see. Mine is a 2" front and back. 285x70x17 Toyo R/T.

You might be surprised what 2" will do for additional clearance (and flex if you're adding new control arms)

If you're just looking to fit big tires in then there are plenty of cheap lifts out there.  However, I don't recommend cheap lifts because you're going to end up spending more money on other things like realigning drivelines, fixing diff problems, shimming the transfer case etc.
Kindly do not attempt to cloud the issue with too many facts.

Check the weight of the steel bumper and winch.
Your 'truck' does not have the suspension to handle these.
OME puts out a decent spring for front bumpers.
A lift kit will do nothing to help.

We lift a lot of tacomas, someone said don't use rev tek leveling kit(spacers), don't listen, those are fine if your not building a rock crawler. No matter what lift you get, Tacoma's seem to have an issue with the needle bearings, a lot more if they are lifted. Cheap lifts really screw stuff up, so don't go two dollar cheap. Those heavy steel bumpers, you can put them on there if you want, but they suck for techs to have to work around and if you like your mechanics save them the trouble and don't put one on. There's a lot of pavement pushers out there with lift kits of all styles, remember with a lift your going to be modifying your fender wells also.

So a $200 spacer lift that pre loads your suspension isn't a cheap lift???

If your hell bent on lifting your truck don't use a spacer its garbage. why preload your suspension to get lift when you can lift it with coils and get a better ride and more travel for not much more money :dunno:

Exactly.
