:yeah: but I think that is how most people who are lucky enough to draw a sheep tag, the guys that have so much money invested to better the herds are the ones most likely to shoot the biggest ram in the herd

I would rather like to see the best tag (not restricted) go to the lucky guy that draws it, and leave the "restricted" opportunities go to auction. If the state wants to auction off a couple old rams then fine, but the best tag should go to the draw.

I don't think someone should be able to "buy" the largest ram in each unit. That being said, I don't begrudge those that are taking advantage of the opportunity, I blame WDFW, I do not agree with them selling off our largest rams.

"Don't hate the player, hate the game."
Now there is an idea that I could really get behind.  I bet you would see raffle ticket sales go even higher as I would assume that would be an unrestricted tag also.  Some lucky dog is gonna win it.
Pain is temporary, achieving the goal is worth it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.

Phool I believe you missed my original point . pope had said that he thought there where some older class rams that would just die of old age , ones that should be harvested . my point was with only one tag and guys willing to help the one guy that draws shoot the best possible ram , that those older 170 class sheep will just die . That's the way I interpreted it . So whats the answer . more tags ? less help ? or age restriction ? It seems that the herd could handle at least two permits a year but that means three right ? Your much more of a sheep expert than I so how would you address harvesting a couple older scoring rams without shooting of the herd ? For all I know the auction tag holder will go in and harvest a 170 class eleven year old and be really happy with it .  Clemans as you know is a is a quantity not quality unit where there are 18-20 ram permits a year with tribal , that's a hole different story and I know guys that are elated with 170 class rams from there .

My question for Pope is with three tags being given out would the herd become fragile ? In your opinion would a two to three year program of allowing two to three rams a year be the right move ? Or should we be happy the way it is and just take one premium ram a year keeping it world class and allowing rams to die of old age and maybe selling the horns at auction to benefit management ? Your the guy with the best knowledge and your opinion should go along way .

I think the AZ sheep tag just went for $400,000

You can't micro manage it too much.  Fact is, old rams will just have to die on the mountain.  There were no older rams out there than 4-chip but there is one other ram the same age that is about 176", class 4, and a nice trophy.  I hope he is harvested.  Fact is, most times a 6-7 year old ram that hasn't broomed scores better than older rams that have broke off.  Once they get to about 10 years old they have made for the length they have broken off in length/mass and start to outscore the long 6-7 year olds.  I didn't agree with 3 this year and thought 2 was the max but WDFW did the survey and they think this is appropriate.  I think it's in the range of appropriate and they are really good bios making that decision.  The thought always was to offer 2 or so tags but that could never be done because opening it up to 2 in the past system meant that as many as 5 rams could be taken out of there.  The new system will help with that.  It's always adjusted from year to year so we don't need to decide on next year until then.

I like the idea of keeping every unit premium but the fact is us hunters will all "die on the mountain" before we'll ever draw a tag at this rate.  We need to create opportunity as well and that is a mandate when we work on these seasons.  If the quality goes from 178"-185" rams down to 174-178" rams then so be it.  If someone isn't happy with a 175" ram, they got problems.

I have now learned that 2 rams got hit by a car more than likely.  One is dead and the other is limping around with a broken leg.  WDFW knows about it and are going to let "nature take it's course."  But we should take some of these proceeds and get the fence back up...  We just lost these 2 rams who are both mature and who knows how many more by hunting season where 3 more will be harvested.  Fixing a simple fence might mean 1 or 2 of us a year can hunt sheep there with more opportunity if we can stop the road deaths once again...

I think you are being a bit hypocritical Corey...   :P

Two things come to mind . first if they do allow a auction tag they shouldn't get to hunt before the guy with twenty plus preference points . the second is so many members on here live and breath these sheep so when someone draws they get plenty of help harvesting the largest ram . I'd venture to bet if a couple guys bit there tongues a bit some of those older 170 class rams would get harvested . I understand the addiction but believe it will effect the quality of the rams .

Did you wait or did you hunt Sept 1 when you drew the raffle tag?  Did you wait to help the Auction tag holder until after people had a chance hunting the bulls/bucks/rams they had been scouting all Summer?  Were you worried about quality in a herd when you helped him shoot two monster bulls?  You and the auction tag holder benefited from people not biting their tongues.

It sucks when an auction/raffle tag holder can swoop in and shoot an animal out from under you. There is no way someone will pay $150k for a tag they are second on the list to hunt.  One of the biggest reasons these tags bring in so much money is the opportunity to have first shot.  You won't have big money without the best opportunity.

Actually, ya he did.  He spent a good portion of his time off in September hunting with us for cows in Manastash, with a few trips to the colockum with his son for his cow tag.  Thee was no tags left to be filled when we got his buck either.  He was not out there September 1st banging away with his rifle.

Pope thanks for the explanation. ......we'll put . I never ment to rub anyone the wrong way rather just looking for a way to see some of those, older rams enjoyed buy hunters . I guess if stating a fact about how the largest rams are harvested  makes me hypocritical  then I will wear the hat . I never had a issue with it and don't fault anyone for it .

Wow  I never helped a single auction tag holder fill a elk tag nor have I ever met the man or men .  I hunted sheep in October and took a decent representation of the species by my self and packed it out by myself . Lots of help full members gave me info on areas to look for good bulls . I put on 200 miles on my boots and hunted 92 days enjoying every minute of it . I have no problem helping someone out if they are willing to work for it. I have never hand feed anyone a bull and never shared info on anyone' else's throphy find . Just to clarify !   I hunted hard with shootem when he drew the raffle he bought ten tickets . We hunted hard for 45 days he earned everything .

Funny thing about the elk I shot . He was in a area where I found some good bulls the year before . All the boot leather and in November they showed back up .
