Any tips on entering antlers at Sportsman Show?
« on: January 25, 2016, 11:32:24 PM »
Lookin to enter my first bull at the head and horns competition this year. Can anyone give me any tips on the procedure of doing this? All I know is that all entries have to be by 6pm on Saturday. I'm guessing any antlers can be entered on any day prior...

You will have to leave them and pick them up on the last day after they do the awards. Just pay a fee and enter away :IBCOOL:

Like said earlier just show up pay a $25.00 fee and leave them there. I just brought mine in to have them officially scored and FORGOT to grab them when I left that day! when I went back they were hanging on the wall in 1st place so I left them until Sunday  :chuckle: and took 2nd place. haha. try and bring them on the 1st day if you can though its a lot easier packing them in with the lighter crowds. Good luck. I just do it to find out the score and get official...

I've always been curious what the criteria is they judge on. Is it strictly score? Are there different categories like what state it was from? Bow, Rifle, muzzy, character? What kind of prizes? I'd enter my bull too, but I know score wise there will be bigger there and don't want to waste my time.

They break it into a ton of category's.  By animal first, then by method, then by age(youth or not), by year harvested and it is just by score for your category.  Small prizes for those, knives and stuff like that.  The big prizes are given out for closest to the state record by percentage of score.

Well, my antlers were judged as a 5x6. Netted 310 1/8".  Came in 4th in the cascade elk archery class. When all was said and done, the fees were about $100 to enter him into the northwest big game book and with pope and young.

Getting it in Pope and Young is what added to the cost, still shouldn't have been $70 to get it into that I wouldn't think but maybe costs have really gone up.

Do they categorize them OTC or permit animals? Its more impressive to get a trophy animal in a general season. but it would probably just make for to many categories.

:dunno:
Are you saying you don't put in for permits?

Do you think sheep and moose should have separate categories?  There is no general season for those.

I have seen this debate over auction tag animals, but come on, it is a legal season and harvested legally, it shouldn't be looked at any differently than a general season animal.
