picking up a .22lr trying to choose?

CZ is the best bolt gun, I don't own a single Ruger. I've had them and dumped them all.

I would go for the American it has a more man sized stock and out of the box it will be more ready to hunt than the 10/22. I'm 6'3" so stock size is always an issue for me.

That's another thing I forgot to mention. To me the 10/22 felt like a kid's gun. Too light and too small, and that, along with the extremely heavy trigger pull made it difficult to shoot accurately.

If you can afford a CZ 452, they are a great gun. But otherwise, I'd be looking at Savage, or maybe Marlin.

I had 2 10/22's. The breakdown and the carbine. I ended up selling the carbine as I like the break down so much. It's deadly with a scope on it!

I had a Remington 541 T ...Wish I never sold it ...now I think I am needing another .22 ..  have to magnums but no .22 LR ... Not sure what to buy now .

love my CZ 452.  i just don't shoot .22 much these days because i don't like burning through what little ammo i have.

I have a highly customized 10/22, a couple of CZ 452s, and an Anschutz sporter.
The 10/22 is the one I would sell right now.

I disagree on the 10/22

Get a bolt action, CZ would be my 1st choice.  I've shot a few CZ's and really like them.

  I like the 10/22. The only other firearm I can think of that is more customizable is a 1911. You can go basic wood, synthetic, of composite...  Drop in parts, match grade drop ins , or even custom made parts are available.   Barrels come in all weights, lengths, and profiles that you could come up with.

  Today's 10/22 is a bit better than ones coming out 15 or more years ago, they've tightened up the quality on the production line, although still not to the liking of a lot of folks. Ruger has admitted the trigger sucks, but instead of fixing it they sell their own add on trigger set. I's still go Volquartsen or another brand.

A Ruger American us pretty much what you get when you buy it, once in your hands you are stuck with few options so you better really love it.

 So remember, it's a plinking gun you want to have fun with. Have fun with whichever choice you make.

  BTW, my plinker is a complete gun from Volquartsen keeping things inside a dime at 75 yds., one I will never get rid of.

I have a few CZ 452's and a CZ 455 and they are seriously accurate rimfires.  I would recommend them 10 out of 10 times. 

If you swing it then get one and you won't be disappointed.  That said I still think the Ruger American isnt a bad choice.

The 452 has the set trigger right? That is a sweet gun. I just shot one a cpl. months ago. Hard to find on gunbroker. It's apples and oranges though. The 452 is something you can hand down to your kids. The Ruger is something you can throw in the back of the truck.

Don't forget the BL-22 also.15 rounds of fun. Also own a 452 with a 24.5 tube, almost too boringly accurate at the range

I've got an American and have been super pleased with. Threw a Vortex rimfire scope on it, really good combination, fun to shoot, accurate, and fits well.

Throwing in a plug for an oldie but a goodie that you can find on the cheap every once in a while.  I have a mid 1930's Savage 23A (bolt gun, 5 shot clip) that is seriously accurate with some brands of ammo.  It is a really fun gun to shoot, beautiful too with the schnabel forend.
