Best high volume water filtration
« on: January 28, 2016, 07:20:29 AM »
Ok guys help my make up my mind
I've been trying to figure out what is the best/lightest/fastest way to filter water for up to 3 guys   Thinking I'm going to peace something together as I don't see exactly what I'm thinking of
Thinking of something similar to the Platypus Gravity system except with zip top bags (3L )
I've been using a MSR pump and dromedary Blatter at about 23 oz total and in the quest to cut pack weight more I'm going to more shared gear
This place protected by God and Guns trespass and you might get to meet Both !

I have two systems that both work great. For large groups I have a Katadyn base camp that holds 10L, filters fast and is super handy. Fill it up, leave it hang and use water as neaded, really works great.

For just me or another buddy I have a 3L big zip with a quick detach and a sawyer mini filter. I can use it much the same as the base camp, but its probably half the weight and I still have the advantage of 3L of water in camp. I keep an MSR dromlite in my bag as my normal bladder/water source which also has the quick detach, so any time I need water I don't need to take it out of the bag I just disconnect the quick detach, attach the sawyer mini and fill'er up.

I've seen people make a gravity filter out of a Sawyer Mini/Squeeze. Doesn't seem hard to do, and its cheap to boot!

I've had great luck with the katadyn base camp.  Its all I use when we go.  Packs pretty small.  Use it to fill up platypus bags.  If you have a base camp you can leave it in a tree and use it for several bottle fills.  Really a handy unit.

Works great. Filter the first batch of water . Then fill up the top bag and bring it with you to filter later when you need more.

Platypus Gravity works great if you have a lake or large running source of water.

Ponds don't work well because there's no pre filter, and it will clog you up fast.

And if you are pulling out of puddles...good luck!

We switched to the Katadyn Hiker Pro and haven't looked back!

We have been using the Katadyn Basecamp for several years when there are 3+ of us. No complaints except when it gets really cold, I get volunteered to sleep with it so it doesn't freeze.....

Depends on the hunt.  If you have flowing water or mountain lakes you are pulling from then aquamira drops are money.  If elk wallow is gonna be your likely water source then I take the Katadyn.

:chuckle:  :yeah: wouldn't recommend dropping an aquamira in some good ol' muddy wallow water/pee

Those Katadyn base camp filters are great plus for a couple of bucks you can get an attachment that allows you to use it as a portable shower

Is the Katadyn Hiker PRO Water Filter better then the MSR Sweetwater Filter? I have been using the MSR but it seems like it takes forever to fill up a bottle, just wondering if the Katadyn is quicker and easier to use...

I am one of those....

Some of the fittings are tough to get (unless you order in bulk)
I did a lot of searching around and was able to pull it off though...

Cheap, light, and made me proud!

I have a gravity filter as well and just use the dirty water bag then filter that water ( by gravity) into a collapsible 5gl container with a spicket. We just kind of constantly keep refilling the bag every now and again and before you know it we have a full 5gl of clean water to use. By myself, I only use my Aqua-Mirra drops. I'm always by a lake, creek or river though. I have a 3ltr platypus that I will fill up and 15 min I have clean water to drink .
