7mm08 vs .270 for daughter
« on: January 28, 2016, 05:09:50 PM »
Howdy
I will be getting my daughter a rifle she can use for deer and elk and wondering what your thoughts are.I'm not sure which one has less recoil I know it depends on ammo selection but I was wondering if anybody may have experience with both
Thanks
Jim

Recoil is a factor of several variables. You can shoot mild ammunition in a 270 that reduces recoil to more pleasant levels. If I had a 270 that's what I would do. If I were purchasing one I would choose the 7mm-08. It has enough energy to cleanly kill deer and elk out to reasonable distances, with milder recoil everything else equal.
Nature. It's cheaper than therapy.

Both of my daughters harvested their first bucks, respectivley, at 13 years old. Their caliber? A Remington model 7 in 7/08!

Same rifle and cartridge combo accounted for my first elk 17 years ago when I was 13.

I own both and my kids have shot both, they now have Ruger 7mm08 Compacts and love them.

Your daughter is welcome to shoot ours if you would like to try both.

They are both good flat shooting guns. I have a .270. My brother in law, my sister, and both their boys have 7mm-08's. They live on the east coast and he swears there is no better whitetail gun. They live 10 min from the Remington factory and he got the boys ones with a blemish or something on the stock. All Rem 700's. They all love them. My Savage .270 is a lower end gun but shoots flat. I just put good glass on it.
