7mm Remington Magnum is a bigger case than the 7mm/08. They both shoot the same diameter bullets but the "Magnum" will do so at a higher velocity. For just starting out I would not recommend any cartridge with magnum in its name. You will be better served by any of the "standard" cartridges. In addition to the 270, also take a look at the 30/06. You want an "all around" cartridge, well you can't do better than the 30/06 in that regard.

Rob...I really want you to buy a gun so I'm hanging with you. :chuckle: :chuckle:  Man you are making this even more difficult all the time.  Please answer this question first.

Do you reload, or have somebody who is going to reload for you?

If not then life is real simple between those two rounds.  7mm Remington Magnum

Now what is the difference?  350fps  So go run some ballistics with that data to cause you even more worry.

Do you get Dirt Bike Magazine?   If not go online and read the "Mr Know It All" section.  You are really pushing getting the Mr Know it all answer. :chuckle: :chuckle: :bash: :bash:

Oh. the mag action is .75" longer, and 1/8" larger diameter chamber.  Longer and fatter is better and she's lying if she tells you otherwise.

Geez bobcat be quiet...he was narrowed down to on two choices....now you went and added another option.

Huh???  How about looking at the 308 also.  :chuckle:

Low recoil, accurate, shoots as flat as you'll ever want out to 300 yards which is as far as you're likely to shoot, and cheap store bought ammo readily available in many different bullet types and weights.  And did I mention it's easy on your shoulder? But then so is the 270.

Like somebody said, flip a coin.   ;)

once again thanks for all the help...I might borrow my buddies and try it out.I have only hunted with a 30-06. I guess if I get the tikka in .270 win it gives me an excuse to buy another rifle.

No I do not reload...dont think I would have the patience. But really everyone is being awesome...thanks keep feeding me info!!

Seriously between the 270, 7 Mag, and 30/06, they're all the same when it comes to hunting and putting an animal down. You'll never notice a difference and either will the animal. Since you're not going to be reloading, go to the store and check out ammo prices. The one with the lowest price ammo is what you really should consider getting. Because you're not going to be proficient with a rifle you can't afford to shoot.

The 7mm magnum?  The 7mm Remington Magnum?  The 7mm RUM will beat it hands down.  Might as well go with the big dog of that caliber.

I agree. If you want a flat shooting cartridge go with the Ultra Mag. There is virtually no difference in trajectories between the 270 and 7mm Rem. Mag.

Heck get that 284 Warbird or what ever they call it.  No....go for the 7mm STW because it does not recoil as much as the RUM, but it shoots flatter then the standard Rem. Mag.  No....I think a custom wildcat in 7mm would be best.  No....you don't reload so you need a good ammo selection.  Well,  I guess your right back to where you started.   :chuckle:

If it was me, and I was going to buy one rifle for a while it would be the old 06.  I only have two guns, but if I could only have one it would be the 06.  That last sentence was serious no joke at all.
