I would ask machias's method, he seems to get a lot of skunks.

I used to get dozens skunks every year until I switched to traps they walk in and out of as they please

Most of the time when I drown skunks it's all in how you do it.  If you sloooowly lower the trap in the water 99% of the time they do not spray.  Drop or toss your trap in and you will end up with an oil slick.  Make sure you leave them for a bit.  I have drown skunks, put them in the truck and got home and walked around back to a wide awake skunk.  Yehaw!  What I like to use now is a syringe on the end of a telescoping pole and inject 10 to 12 cc of Acetone into their lungs.  They are stone dead in about 10 seconds.  No smell what so ever.

Congrats. I like the bucket idea. Wonder why it sprayed though. Curious to know your thoughts on why it sprayed. As well as how to keep them from spraying.
My guess would be the fact the skunk doesnt die right away in the bucket. He just swims until he gets tired and then drowns. I've heard of people taking a trap with the skunk still in it (covered with a blanket or something else) and setting it in water. I believe thats a good way to keep it from spraying but I dont deal with skunks enough to know for sure. My plan is to make a setup with a pvc pipe inside that the skunk crawls into and then trigger it to fall into the water filled bucket while he's stuck inside the pvc pipe. Then he's totally submerged and cant swim. And then maybe he wont spray.  :dunno: Worth a try.

They will still spray.
OK. That's nice to know. I will gear towards building a CO2 trap like Bruce's.
I bought a huge portable CO2 tank over the summer at a garage sale for $25 and it was full too! I was going to try using it to gas cats that way their skull is in perfect shape. Id rather not shoot them in the lungs either.

Stop and talk to me about cats sometime.

Decided to pull up my traps and move to a different area 5 days ago. Put out six traps and next day there was skunks at four of them. :bash: Talked to Bruce Friday and he let me borrow three skunk tubes to use. I put them out yesterday and this morning there were skunks in all three. I must say that the CO2 tank works awesome for a quick, humane way to dispatch skunks without them spraying. Although, my first skunk actually sprayed a little in the trap before I arrived. Nowhere near as bad as the one I got the other day with the bucket.
My other three cat traps had skunk activity as well so all the skunk tubes went out again and more than likely I'll have three more skunks tomorrow. Kind of hard to believe there is actually that many civet cats in the woods. That means all but two of my cat sets this season have had skunks at them!

I've got a couple striped skunks but no civt furs. Who do you guys send them to to be tanned? Ouchfoss, I'd love to get one as well if you have enough.

No I don't. My plan is to give Bruce all my civets since he is a pro at skinning them and I wanted to keep a few to have tanned. I'm still scared to skin one for fear of popping the scent gland. It's one thing to have one spray out in the woods but when that smell let's loose on your own property in your fur shed, its a whole other story. My wife might make sleep there for a few nights.  :chuckle:

Moyle's is where I plan to have all my furs sent to this year. Heard nothing but good things about their quality. I'm sure I could probably save one for ya.
