I was going to say- if you want to hunt Bumping look into using an outfitter. Either that or having your own horses, or plan on being in exceptional shape.

Steep and Deep!

I'll second that.  I walk an average of 10mi a day, up and down elevation, and I feel beat every day I'm in that unit.  I'll second the horses though.  Lots of water to cross and great ground miles in.

A sea of trees. Hunting the westside for years, I felt overwhelmed by the size of that unit last season and lack of open ground at the low to mid elevations.

Hunted the unit last year with a buddy who had a bull tag. It's steep and deep alright. He shot a 5x6 opening day. By the end of the day we were close to 20 miles after packing meat. We scouted two days prior to the hunt and were in the elk pretty heavy. Horses would defenitly be a plus in the unit.
Happiness is being in the woods!!!

Have good footwear. Have to be a ninja to climb over all the logs that are in that unit. Some areas are thick, others are not.

Another tip is to use the search bar at the top. Lots of threads on the unit.

Naches Sportsman; not to high jack this thread .... but when I saw the pic you posted I had to respond with my own. I know exactly where you took that pic.... and here is mine taken in the exact same spot July 2010.

I've hunted a few states for elk now, and the bumping is still my favorite unit by far. Classic elk country.

Hunted it in the past, lots of elk up American ridge. Other hunters drive past it to get back in the hills.

Here is my 2 cents.  There should be twice as many archery elk bull tags given out in this unit.  Present rate with point creep it takes more than 7 points to draw.  Lucky if you get one every 10 years.

Hunted this unit for the first time last season. I had elk encounters everyday and really enjoyed my time. Put about 60 miles on the boots in 7 days of hunting so you'll have your work cut out for you if you don't have horses. I spent my time of the south side of the unit. Hoping to draw the bull tag this year with 13 points.

Looks like a they're increasing the number of tags this year by a substantial amount for the bumbing and a few others.

From what I saw looks like they are keeping it the same.
Where did you see that at?

I don't know. Maybe its just talk :dunno:
That is an interesting read. They show no proposed changes in the proposed regs. Unless they are talking antlerless I didn't look at those I was just looking at bull/quality permits

When the lion kill is that high, how do they justify no hound hunting?

Some of them held hunting licenses. These same "Elitist Hunters" voted to ban foothold traps.

It was mostly the middle 80% that flipped the vote and got it banned.  Not the 10% that hunt.  Sure some hunters might have but not any that I know.

Do any of you remember an add for anti hound hunting where guys were holding little baby bears after killing a show on a TV add? I was super young so I barely remember it but looking back it must have been around the time they were trying to outlaw hound hunting
