Chrono... Magneto speed or ?
« on: February 04, 2016, 09:19:50 PM »
Once my tax return rolls in I am going to purchase a chronograph. I saw that magneto speed is making a less expensive sporter model for around $180. Does anyone have experience with the lower end magneto? Do you prefer this over a standard chrono? If not what other brands/models would you recommend? I would like to keep it around $200 and will be used for rifle load development. Any input is appreciated!

Last time chronographs came up the discussion escalated quickly! The Magnetospeeds are great but you would be just as well served by one of the $100 chronys most of the time. If you plan to chronograph handguns or bows then a more conventional chrony is a better investment. If you like to chronograph your guns while doing load work the Magneto isn't a great option either. While it hasn't been a huge shift, I have seen a variation in POI and group size when shooting with the Magneto on the barrel. It's more pronounced on sporter weight barrels.

I've had great results using multiple different Shooting Chronys as long as you get them setup properly each use. They're only a problem if you want to shoot in unfavorable conditions.

I just picked up a shooting chrony beta master off a coworker for $50. He's never used it. After reading some reviews and consulting with an expert I couldn't say no!

The MagnettoSpeed Sporter has worked great for me. As mentioned, the POI does change though it is not a concern to me due to I use it after my load is chosen.

The magneto speed is cool but useless if you need to know your speed at distance. I like my digital pro chrono. Plus it's cheap enough I won't cry too much if I shoot it

I've used the basic Crony for shooting as well as archery. Easy to use and fits my needs.

It's sounding like the pro chrono is the way to go... Thanks for the suggestions! Keep them coming if anyone else has an opinion.

I own a CED.  I have also shot over many CED's at various competitions as they are the primary chrono for pistol competitions.  At a Comp they typically use dual CED's that are placed in line to one another.  It is interesting how close these CED's are to one another and then compared to the velocities that I get off of mine (at home) and my buddies (they all have them too), they are very similar.

Also, I will run a rifle load over it, plug the numbers into the phone app and easily shoot to 1k so the velocity must be on.  I am sure there are comparable models out there but I have experience with this model dozens of times when you include mine, buddies and various competitions.

I recently started using the Magnetospeed and for me it was a huge improvement over my Shooting Chrony for a couple of reasons.  I shoot at a public range and I can set it up while the range is hot.  Also my range has baffles that interfere with a clear view of the sky; sometimes getting the Chrony to work is pretty hit and miss.  So far the Magneto speed is 100% on reading shots.  If you go with the Magnetospeed my only advice is to make sure you crank the strap down tight if you're shooting anything with medium to heavy recoil.

My shooting buddies and I are thinking of picking up one of these.  The radar units eliminate most of the set up hassles of conventional chronos (no more going hot and cold at the range to set up your chrony) and don't adversely impact barrel harmonics like the magnetospeed.

Good info! That radar set up looks sweet but I'm afraid it's above my pay grade.
