Double Toothed Deer
« on: March 17, 2016, 10:31:49 AM »
Hey all,
Just completed another huge round of Europeans and thought I would share/show one skull that was pretty unique. A gentleman brought in this mulie he shot late in the season. Check the first set of his upper teeth...doubles! I believe it was near Goldendale ('costal blacktail' to Jim Brunsworth'... :chuckle:). I remember when he brought the head in it definetly looked like a classic 'bench buck'-mulie-blacktail cross. I wish I had taken picture of the cape to show what I mean; face color of mulie, but smaller/shorter, smaller ears, hide/cape coloring of a blacktail, etc. My point is.... and running by anyone else that either has expertise in this area, that when certain close species cross (ie. bison/cattle, horse/donkeys, etc.) that there can be genetic 'flaws' or defects that can be very minor. Or maybe its just a hereditary defect specific to this deer. My curiosity peaked to see, if this was a bench buck, the upper double teeth could be result of such a cross.
Every animal is so different that comes to my shop, and while I love seeing big antlers, color phase bears, unique elk, etc. its also the small details that intrigue me. Thought I might share this and see if anyone else has seen this or knows where this could have come from.
