Saw 4 Goats on MtSt Helens today
« on: February 07, 2016, 07:16:53 PM »
Amazing how tough these animals are to live up there just below the Plains of Abraham at the head of Ape Canyon. What do they eat!  Seems like the goat population is stronger than ever up there, wonder if they will give out any permits in the area soon...
If you're gonna be dumb, you gotta be tough.

Counted over 20 when we went up and around it.  Another large group around Norway Pass.
Cut em!

I've seen them above Shoestring Glacier.  Had them graze within 15 yards on Mt. Whittier.  Pretty cool.

Are those plants, or did they natural come back after the eruption? I think I read in national geographic that 60+ goats were killed when she erupted.  :dunno:

Last summer, saw a lone nanny on the small, steep volcanic peak just above St. Charles Lake off the 99 Road.  They are coming back naturally.  Over the last 35 years, goats would typically wander in on rare occasion, and then disappear again.  Looks like they are here to stay, for now.  The persistent open landscape conditions across much of the blast zone is a good thing for goats!

We've counted over 40 in a weekend up there. Its certainly a huntable population, wish they would give us some tags

Yeah, I second the 40 count.  We saw a ton on the side of the mountain when I was up there for my Upper Smith Creek elk tag.

Need that count to be around 100 before they will think about tags.  When I had my Naches tag a few years ago the bio said they issue 1 tag for about every 100 goats they can count.  Would be cool to have a hunt up there someday.

There are way more goats then most people think.  I see a ton of goats in areas that are not even open to hunting for them.  Can't figure out why thou..  :stirthepot:

Would be interesting if they did a count...I've seen the big group of 40 up on the side of the mtn and then two days later I seen another 10 or so back by panhandle lake..hard to tell if it's part of the same bunch

I wouldn't be suprised if there's 60-70 in the monument area

Does anyone know how big of an area that 100 goats has to be inside ??
