Splitting hairs...6.5-06 or 6.5x270
«

well, my buddy just built a really nice 6.5-06. After looking at his cases, I started thinking...if I used a 270 as the parent cartridge I could end up with a longer neck to help accuracy.
so, has anyone built a 6.5-270???

I was under the impression that the .270 was based on the .30-03 case I don't know if there is enough of a length difference to matter.

The simple answer is no. The difference neck length between the 270 and 30-06 is about .001 with the 270 being the shorter. The SAAMI standard for the 6.5-06 has a neck length that is .0656 shorter than the 270. You could use 270 or 30-06 brass to form 6.5-06 and the 270 would be less abuse on the brass. I'm all for having a different cartridge than the next guy in the woods but how you are looking at it you won't gain much. Maybe consider doing a 6.5-06AI for something close to your friend's but still different.
