Another new reloader question(s)
« on: February 10, 2016, 08:58:13 AM »
So, I finally got my reloading press after being backordered for over a month. How many rounds did you use to test you're initial load(s)? 5,10,100?
Initially, should I do a couple of different loads? Load using the starting grains and also a couple of different test loads a little hotter to compare?
Hypothetically, Should I make 5 rounds a the starting powder recommendation and another 5 rounds with say a .5-1 grain more powder to test?
Should I be investing in a chronograph?
I"m initially loading for 9mm but also will be loading 45 Colt and .243.

Thanks.

For pistol I usually start with a pressure test. I load up 2 rounds of each starting low and move up in .1gr increments. Once I find pressure signs I work down loading 5 rounds at each charge till I get the most accurate one.
For rifle I use ladder test method and it has worked very well for me

I typically load 3 rounds at the starting load and work up in .5 grain increments. Once I find the most accurate powder charge I will load up 3 more to confirm. From there I will use that powder charge while playing with seating depth until I achieve my desired accuracy.
