New Tripod Head?
« on: February 13, 2016, 12:48:12 PM »
I own a Nest alum tripod with a real basic head, It just mounts then u have the move the camera around by just loosening the ball.
Im looking to upgrade my head and wondering what some of you guys run with, Looking for something inexpensive, but not plastic.
Go.

I'd rather have a cheaper, more beastly (heavy) tripod and a quality ballhead than a high speed, carbon fiber tripod and a crappy head.  :twocents:

I recently bought a Sirui K30 and its amazing. But you'd have to spend $150ish.

If I had to buy today, I'd pick up a DB44, which used to sell for $250, and is being clearanced out for $80. There's only 2 left in stock so buy it NOW and then think about it later. Remember Amazons great return policy. In the same price range, manfrotto will give you a cheap plastic head. We have a tripod sitting around at the office--why? I have no clue--but its about a $100 head and wouldn't give you anywhere near the quality of a Sirui or  Desmond. Buy once, cry once / buy nice or buy twice.

For the lurkers, this is a ballhead, not a 3-way/pan & tilt/video head whose ergonomics are  more optimized for spotting scope use. Smoss is asking about a head for photography, which ballheads are better for those of us little people who aren't shooting 500mm lenses.

I run this head or its cousin on my backpack setup. It is stupid light. I prefer my Manfrotto ball head when I don't have to pack it far. I have a Manfrotto 3 way head that is nice too and lighter than the ball, but not as quick...imo.
