Don't forget to apply. I think the deadline is March 3rd. And the pts only application period stays open for 2 more weeks. So if March 3rd is right it would be March 17th for pts only.

I got my applications in tonight.

The cost is $65 for the license and $10 per species.

Cheap some where around $85 dollars. And if you plan it out right it will be $20 every other year since there license is good for a year from the date you purchase it.

Don't mean to draw more attention to this thread but, after doing some quick research and picking out a good deer and elk unit. What is the average amount of years to draw those top units for rifle, and can you apply with partners? PM are good, thanks.

I don't mean to rain on anyone's parade, but if you're counting on points to draw one of the highly sought after tags, you might not get it in this lifetime.

I started putting in for Utah points 16 years ago and last year did draw a good, but not great, elk tag (Bookcliffs late). I don't remember what the points that were required when I first started, but point creep is going to kill you guys that are just starting.

Here's why:

In 2015 there were over 12,000 non-resident applicants for LE elk tags. Only 267 drew tags (and only 104 got them on bonus points, the rest on lottery)
In 2015 there were over 11,000 non-resident applicants for LE deer tags. Only 122 drew tags (and only 47 got them on bonus points)

I don't want to discourage you from applying, just go in with your eyes wide open. I started putting in for points in Colorado 20 years ago and still have about 2500 non-residents with more points than me. I wanted to draw a unit 61 muzzy tag when I first started and it only took 6 points then. Now it's like 24 or something. I will never draw that tag in my lifetime.

If you look at several years worth of stats, you'll see that points on the good units usually go up about a point per year. Point creep is a killer. My recommendation is to apply and hope you get one of the lottery tags (50% of allocated tags per unit) and burn your points on an okay hunt when you can.

I'm hoping once the baby boomer generation starts hitting 60s and 70s there will be a huge move every year in upper tier point category dropping out or cashing in on lesser hunts due to age and desire to hunt. My only chance. Lol

Just drew central mts Manti archery bull thru the Sportsmans convention draw I guess it does pay off to go to these conventions

Thanks for the info TomT, those odds kinda explain why it's cheap to apply. Seems like you have a very very slim chance, if I was 20 again I'd be all over this, thanks for the info.

Congrats Walleye! I've been thinking of going to that show for a few years now. Was it a good show? I have family that live a few miles from the Manti unit and I've explored it a little. Beautiful country!

I wouldn't go just for the show its just ok. We went to the banquet to see the high dollar tag sale. Full curl society giveaway I think nine sheep tags Plus your Utah convention tags make it worth the trip for me. And if you like mule deer there's probably 200 plus 200 inches mounted

Understand the stats but keep in mind that those stats are for the entire state. You can look at the different areas and find better chances. There are places that are great for really nice bulls and places that are good. If you go for archery your chances are better but it is hard hunting with long shots. Still better than this state.

Yes, I agree, that is why I suggested burning points on easier to draw areas. I was only pointing out that if people are just starting out with a dream of drawing one of the highly coveted tags, the odds are very slim.

TomT, I wasn't arguing with you because you are correct, I was just pointing out that it is not all doom and gloom for those not needing to get into the premium units. I went there last year for general season Mule Deer and had an absolute blast. Nearly every day I was glassing great bucks and then trying to get a good stalk on them. 85 yards was the closest I could get but still it was awesome. The average bucks I was looking at were 160 class deer with one really nice buck that was pushing 180. This was in a National park public land hunting. I never ran into another hunter the whole week and it was only week two of the season.

So if someone wants quality hunting and a good chance at general season while keeping the dream alive by collecting points, Utah is a good choice.

Went to the show as well in Utah. Things are getting interesting down there with regard to the expo and the tags given away.

I'm all ready to apply, I've been waiting until the last minute because this year I have to buy a license and waiting gives me longer next year. I'm going long odds again this year so I will likely just be gaining points. I am getting closer though, 17 points for deer and bison and 7 for everything else. Good luck everybody.
