Compound bow around $450
« on: February 21, 2016, 05:29:41 PM »
I have about $450 and am considering getting into archery. I would like to bowhunt someday but know nothing about bows. My question is can I get a decent bow for around $450? If so what kind and what should I look for?

If you search you can find decent bows for that price used. Diamond has a few you can pick up new for that price too. I'd go find out your draw length and how much poundage your comfortable shooting.

Is cabelas a decent place to get a bow? I have some gift cards there is why I ask. What Diamond models should I look at?

are you done growing?  If not you might want to check out the ultra adjustable offerings like the Diamond infinite edge.  Heck, even if you ARE done growing, they're a heck of a bow for the price and animals fall to them like any other.  Go to Cabelas, shoot what they have, see what fits your budget and your hand.     Welcome!  :hello:

I would keep your eyes on the classifieds. Bows downy hold there resell value that well so you could pick up a used one for that.  I always a little weary buying used arrows.

:yeah:

My 30yr old son has this bow. He loves it and it kills deer the same as any other. Plus in time he will upgrade and have his son start shooting this one in a few years as he is only 3 now. But the adjustability of the bow is great. 5lb-70lb

Look for a used Bowtech CPXL 70#.  Super sweet shooting bow, and I picked mine up for 500.00

One of these is in your price range (new bow/full warranty).  You'd have to piece together the sight, quiver, rest separately (you can get that stuff with your Cabelas cards).  I'm a "huge" fan of these bows and have had mine for four years.  Rock solid performance, easy shooting, and Alpine customer service is second to none, and, they're made in US (Idaho).

I am indeed done growing. I just received some cabelas gift cards, I have all the guns I need for now so figured I would use that money to try out archery. I was looking at the exact bow. I will definetly go check it out in person

If you're new to archery don't go to Cabela's and buy a ready to shoot bow package, they'll slam it together and send you out the door.  Use your cabela's points/cards to buy some camo or targets to shoot at.

I made that mistake and it set back my archery skills for years as I frustratingly fought with a bow I didn't know how to tune nor shoot properly.

find a shop and get a relationship going with one of the employees or owner, or better yet a mentor with a used bow that knows a thing or two and has the equipment and know how to tune and practice with you.

450 will get you a very nice bow.  However, don't forget the expense of arrows, quiver, sight, rest, release, etc.  This can run you a good amount extra.

Just talked to a guy this weekend that won a bow from cabela's with a bunch of extras.  he is going to bring it to me so I can post it in the classifieds.  Not sure what it is or what it will go for but I will be sure to let you know once I get more info and post it.

I didn't say it would be easy, I said it would be worth it.
