Which pack ?!?! MR/Kifaru/exo
« on: February 23, 2016, 11:03:31 AM »
looking for a new pack this season I have been running the kuiu icon pro 5200 for the past 2 seasons and am thinking of trying something new. I had no issues with the kuiu just want to cycle through some higher end packs and am on the fence between;  MR Metcalf ---Exo 5500---kifaru timberline 2--- any information on any of these 3 would be appreciated thanks in advance !
not worried about price    any other suggestions of packs not on my list are welcome as well

If you get the Kifaru with the new Duplex frame, I'm willing to bet you won't be sorry.

I had the Exo and now have new kifaru duplex with dt1 and I am not looking back..  For me the comfort is better and the bag and frame are bomb proof from what I can tell.  The Exo really didn't fit me real good.  It is a good pack but I am not sure if me personally can put them on the same level as MR or kifaru..   I did love the bag layout though of the Exo..

I tried the Exo and Kuiu and kept the Kuiu.  Very happy with it as I wanted something very light for a daypack that can pack elk/moose quarters on a meat shelf when needed.  I've packed two moose and an elk with it and it performed flawlessly.

If I was backpacking regularly I would bump up to the kifaru.  Probably the Duplex frame but wouldn't use that for day hunts - my 3 lb kuiu is very nice for a day pack / meat pack.

I have used the bikini frame with a t2 bag the last couple seasons and really liked it. Bought a duplex frame recently to use with my highcamp bag and it looks like it will work out great. My brother had a mr crew cab then bought a t2 ended up selling the mr. He liked the kifaru better. I have never tried the exo but have heard good things about them.

The only negative about the MR is that it's fairly heavy empty. I would add SG to you list also. Haven't used a T2 but I packed to bulls out in a T1 this year and it worked really well. For a do all pack the T1 or T2 is extremely hard to beat.

You just missed a smoking deal on the MR Marshall (the old 6500).  Camofire had the full kit, lifters, and NICE frame for $359.99.
If you call them now, they still have 12 in stock.  Just an option for you.

i love my Stone Glacier.  only change that I am considering is going to their new bag Sky Talus 6900.  I have the Sky Archer 6200 and the refinements made in the 6900 were the primary recommendations I had on my list of improvements.

The big question for me is what will its intended purpose be?  You a day hiker or a backpacker?  Will you be carrying moderate weight or heavy loads?
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

thanks so much for all the input! and after all the recommendations I have gone with the Kifaru duplex Hunting platform and the Timberline 2 bag. Several people have replied to me and pushed me towards Kifaru, cannot beat 100% American made product either. To answer the people who have asked what I intend on doing with it. Ill be doing 3-5 day overnight trips out of it. During 2015 I boned out and carried my first backcountry kill and just wanted to upgrade my pack ! thanks again to everyone that replied! cheers to 2016
