New to AR's want to build 6.5 grendel with dad.
« on: March 05, 2016, 10:49:00 AM »
So I have never owned or built an AR before. My dad came to me the other day and said we should start piecing together stuff to build an AR . I have read a lot on here and other sites and decided on the 6.5 platform. Uses will be fun plinking ,varmint hunting and possibly deer. Not worried about finish now as I will prob have it coated down the line. Would like a light weight rifle as opposed to a tactical AR.  No idea where to start. Have heard 18" 1:8 barrel is way to go. Not rushed to get it done and want to take time building with dad so don't need complete guns. Thanks for info and help in advance.

Yeah I've read a bunch. I know things in the AR world change pretty regularly and new companies come out with new items and others fall off. Just want to see what the best current options are. Mainly brands and best options for the 6.5.

My two boys and I are getting ready to start 3 AR builds, probably all three will be Grendel's.  Mine will probably be a 24" not sure what the boys want to do.  Lots of options to choose.  Only thing i know for sure so far is the stripped lowers(cause I've already bought them)  The hand guard and stock.  Other than that, I've no choices.  Every time I think I got it, I see something different.  More than likely all the barrels will come from BHW, but who knows for sure.

I'd also check out 65grendel.com it has way more info and it's dedicated to the 6.5 grendel obviously.  I'd guess all of your questions could be answered there.  It's been very helpful to me along with some of the people on this site in building an AR and now a bolt gun in 6.5 Grendel.

I have two Anderson Lowers and one SAA lower that will be used.  Will probably get a stripped SAA upper for my build.  The handguard will be a 15" from Trinity Force  and the but stock will be a LUTH-AR MBA-1  And I know I will do a self cerekote cammo job something like the pic below

I like the adjustability on the stock. Is the cerakote camo easy to do? Nice clean lightweight looking hand guard .

I find it easy to do, but very time consuming because you have to let each application dry.  The NEF in the pic took me a couple days, but it's not cerekote, just paint.

Creedmore would have to be built on an AR-10 platform, not AR-15

That was one question that came up. Is  6.5 grendel an ar-15 platform?or ar -10 ?

Put this together a couple years ago. 18" barrel 1/8. Total weight 7lbs 14oz (unloaded). The barrel is from AA the founder of Grendel. I love this rifle sub moa and you can shoot it all day with out recoil fatigue. As for BHW barrels make sure you get the SAMMI Grendel. Lots of great barrel makers just make sure who ever you go through are SAMMI SPECS and MATCHING BOLT. Have a fun build and don't forget the pics when done  ;)
Hey! I'm not a complete idiot I have parts missing. Though sometimes I wonder.
