Need some advise!
« on: March 06, 2016, 01:54:20 PM »
Ok so here is the deal, I am looking for a new scope. I will be putting it on a howa 300 win mag. I have looked and the vortex viper with the dead hold, Nikon monarch bdc, and the leupold with the mil dots I believe it was the 3. Well I need some advise from you guys that like to shoot ling distance and hunt deer that might end up being a long shot. I like the Nikon bdc because the app is cool but i am still not sure on putting a circle on a deer compared to plane crosshairs or a (mill line). I also like the fact of zero out turrets. Thanks to all in advance!!!

for me bdc reticles are just to generic for long range hunting, even with the app you have angle and barometric pressure to deal with. imho I would learn how to dial if you want to extend your range

A few more questions need to be answered before narrowing down to help give advise.
1. What do you consider long range (yardage) ?Note depending on range dial  turrets may be better then BDC reticles in scopes.
2. Price range of willing to spend on a scope? Note: it is better to spend more on optics.
3. Will you be use factory loads or be handloading your own ammo?
These answers would help give you advise  to your questions.
Nothing like a Remington model 700xcr.

Ok I am thinking most likely around 700yd max if I absolute had too last minute kind of thing and I knew I can shoot percistant. I will be shooting factory until I can make my self break down and start hand loading. I will either be shooting 165gr or 180gr. Money wise tops of 700$. I do understand you need to put your money where it belongs on a quality set up.

good for the money, I like leupold for hunting. they are light with low profile turrets. dialing can be intimidating at first but is very easy. you don't need to break the bank to get started, I would look at the leupold 4.5-14 cds, you can find them for less than 500

Do they have the zero turret by chance do you know? I really like that... This is my first rifle, I am an archery hunter and have never hinted with a rifle. But I am going to Idaho for the first time this year and I want to kill a buck with a rifle haha

Ok so they do have one you just need a coupon and send them in information. Is a 40mm or 50mm better in your opinion?

the last one I bought was the 40 with 1'' tube really trying to keep the weight down on that particular set up, happy with it but side by side with my 50 it looses light a bit sooner, if weight is not an issue go 50

I just went through the same dilemma and ended up getting the Nikon 4-16x42 without the BDC from Cabela's for $500. The other scope I was looking at was the Huskemaw 4-16 but pretty spendy. Getting my Weatherby 300 back from Benchmark tomorrow then I'll install the Nikon then it's off to the range. It seems to have good eye relief and Nikon will make a custom turret for it after I send in the info they need. I haven't really checked into that part of it yet. I don't plan on shooting any farther than maybe 5-600yds at the most if that even. May be biting off more than I can chew but it's something I'd like to try.

I love my pst's.  Imo you get a lot more bang for your buck from vortex.  I have a friend with that Nikon and he hates it.   Personally I like to dial for everything beyond 300. I just don't like bdc any more. Dialing is much more consistent Imo. Your best bet is to check them all out in bad conditions if possible.  Ford vs Chevy thing I guess but I've never liked the gold rings my self. And factor in the price makes it seam like your paying for the name

If I had the money I'd go with nightforce or huskemaw, I have had nothing but good luck with my huskemaw.
“In common with”..... not so much!!

There are a lot of nice scopes out there. I have had the pleasure of helping a good friend who builds custom rifles allowing me to go and zero and fire quite a few rifles. We have had all of the scope types to shoot with. With out a doubt there is absolutely no comparison . The Huskemaw and Nightforce are far superior when actually getting to look at all of the manufacturers scopes side by side. I have both the Huskemaw Blue Diamond and the Nightforce Atac R. They are fantastic. I shot a mule deer at over 900 yds with my Huskemaw. I could not put eye guards on the buck with my Leica 10x40 Geovids. When I turned up the Huskemaw to 20 Power WOW!!! Eye guards !!!. Dialed and pulled the trigger. Well worth the money in my opinion. Huskemaw is around $1300.00, Nightforce a bit more.

Agreed, But $700.00 this year then upgrade next year ???? I thought I would mention them. Seems like a cheaper way to go if an upgrade was coming so soon. Definitely would not be sorry for the choice

You do have a point on just spending a little more money now rather than do it twice! I have until October to get a new scope so I think I will look into one of the higher end ones. No reason in buying 2 scopes in a year haha. That's is if someone out bids me on the leupold haha
