March gun of the month 260 Rem pistol
« on: March 06, 2016, 07:00:10 PM »
This one was purpose built for competing in PRS matches. A friend of mine wanted me to go shoot a few PRS matches with him a while back but said that I should do it with one of my Strikers. I thought it would be fun but I needed a repeater to keep up. I decided build a new SP off of an un-designated left hand Savage action and throw it in a chassis so I could run a 10 round AICS mag. I already had a McGowen 19" 260 rem barrel sitting around that I wasn't using. From start to finish I had the whole gun done in less than 3 weeks. That's about as close to instant gratification as it gets with this sort of thing.

I got the whole thing thrown together and then kind of lost interest in it. It was a pretty fun gun though. With a little practice I was able to send off 10 rounds as quick as I could from a rifle and make consistent hits at about 700 yards with it. With a slower rate of fire it was a reasonably capable 1000 yard gun. The 260 just can't keep up with my beloved 284 Striker at the longer ranges and I just didn't put that much time into load work. I got it to shoot .5 MOA and just left it alone. I never got around to taking it to a match, but I'll probably revive this project when I have a little more time to play with it.

It's almost too effective. It actually makes the gun nose dive a bit. When I use a rear bag under the grip it handles pretty well. Off the bipod and without a rear rest though you can see in the video that the muzzle wants to come down. The brake works really well on a rifle when shooting off hand though.

It actually is a little cheaper. I just bought one designed for an AR butt stock and didn't install a stock.

I wasn't that crazy about it either so it's currently in pieces in the parts drawers.  :chuckle: I do really like the Sightron (8-32x56 LRMOA) that was on there. They're some of my favorite scopes for moderate recoiling target guns. It currently sits on my 284 Striker where it will probably stay for a while. They aren't my first choice on larger calibers though. Mine went back for repairs after 2 trips out on my 375 BME. Been running great on the smaller stuff ever since.
