Bullet in wall

Lady's and gentlemen I am in dire need of your help identifying the type of bullet seen in these photos. I am a reloaded and avid shooter of all types of weapons and in my opinion I believe this round came from a pistol. Maybe the rifling may give us a hint of that caliber type or weapon used. Thank you for any help.

Holy smokes man!  Story here?

Looks like a HP, jacketed bullet and since it is in good repair - probably pistol.  Pull it out and put a caliper to the base

I'm thinking rifle based on an assumption. To me it looks like a boat tail bulet that traveled in a tight and down direction in the pic and lodged into the wall. I don't know of any boat tail pistol bullets. 
It could very well be the opposite and that is the front of a bullet?
On second look it seems like a fmj with lead in the base? In that case I'm guessing either .223 caliber or .308

Definitely need more info tho.

Due to texture of wall, and angle of bullet I suspect that it is embedded in an exterior wall from some yahoo who shot up in the air from a distance without thinking about where the bullet was going to come down.

This round appeared to have crash through a double pane window and logged in this wall. It's still under investigation but apparently the police LOST the bullet.... Photo shows the hole after it was removed.
To me it does not appear to be a boat tail

Looks like a rifle projectile. Due to length of the rifling marks on the projectile.

Sure it's not a hollow point? Look's almost like a crimp line on the bottom right and hollow point on top.

Definitely think it's a flat base rifle bullet, tip is buried. Rifling marks are between cannelure and base.

It looks like the width of the hole in the wall pretty closely matches the diameter of the bullet.  It would at least get you in the right ballpark (.223, .308, .45) and offer some scale.

Pretty small bullet - compared to the staples holding that little star to the wall.

Doesn't appear to have any expansion, fragmenting, mushrooming, so I am guessing that it was falling from the sky below expansion velocity.  Pretty crazy, thank you for the back story.

Assuming a staple width of 1/2" looks like the bullet is probably a .224 caliber.  I think Skillet may be right on with his post above.

Yes sir I think boa ttail is correct. The grooves would wouldnt just end it would be all the entire length of the bullet!

Based on the scale posted, I'm thinking  .223 bullet from a 1-10" twist rifle. The twist rate isn't very fast. The bore also appears to be a low groove count, but with the view it could be anywhere from 3 to 5 groove.

You should call in the State Police or the Feds to investigate how (and why) the police could have been so incompetent that they lost a bullet that, by appearances, came through the window of a school and lodged in a wallboard. For a critical piece of evidence to be lost like that, you almost have to assume that it was done purposely; that somebody had something they wanted to hide.
Just a thought.
