They can be with a Special permit if they are modified. I modified one I have shown at the fair. You take the wire loop off that acts as a jaw and slide on a piece of tubing. You then have to cut out the slot it works in so it can fit.
Lot of work but it can be done. Then you can't use it for fur trapping so I don't know if it is all that worthwhile.

It would work for nuisance trapping of cage-shy coons!  Please show us some pictures of this trap.  I think I want a couple of them.

Well apparently  I have been informed the Department has been writing some permits for DP traps and calling them non-strangling foot snares. It might be worth the while to apply for a permit and see what happens.

How would you know that WDFW actually gave you permission to use a DP and you wouldn't get pinched for it later?  Do you put "Dog-proof" in the comments section or what?

Yea, I think it would have to be written on the permit somewhere. Definitely a change as I know a person that was warned for using them several years ago. They told her at the time they were a no no unless modified.

I checked in on this. The new guy at WDFW , Robert Wadell that handles the Special Trapping permits erred in advising people they could use unmodified DP traps.
They will not be issuing any permits for them. Enforcement will write you a ticket if you use them.

So now I'm back to asking to see pics of your modified DP that one CAN get a special permit to use for cage shy nuisance coons.

Chip,
WDFW has backtracked on that too. I'm still talking to them about it. They are really getting nitpicky. Hard to believe but they are saying that might not allow it not because it is not padded but because it only has one jaw.
The law says both jaws have to be padded which they are saying makes only traps with two jaws can be permitted. Bureaucrats  :bash:

We'll have to wait until the first coon with rabies is found in WA State AND it gets reported in the media, AND the soccer moms start panicking because they have raccoons in their yards and THEN WDFW will become very permissive.
