So a deer is too thin skined to shot with a .243 but elk are dense enough for the small diameter bullet to expand beyond 6.5 mm and kill .... this theory only works if you use core locks though .  :chuckle:

:chuckle: :yeah:
It is foolish and wrong to mourn these men.  Rather, we should thank god that such men lived.  -General George S. Patton

The 243 will work, but I prefer something a little larger. I would go with a 9.3, .404, .416 and if you want to put them down hard look at a .458.  :chuckle:

The bc on those is not near what it needs to be. I read on the inter webs that you need a bc of .875 to effectively kill any thing.

.458?  :dunno: Thats barely adequate. You'd really run the risk of losing the animal if you had a marginal shot. .700 nitro express is what I'd recommend.

The only way I think a .243 might possibly be adequate is if you were perfectly lined up to send it to the deers heart through the cornhole. With the good old Texas heart shot you don't gots'ta worry about that impenetrable hide.

Nuts, I was so close to being able to use the 458 Arnold on deer this year.

What happens if I use Barnes bullets in my 243? Does that make me an unethical anti hunting hunter?

This whole thread reminds me, I need to dig out my 14" 243 barrel and throw it on one of the pistols to get ready for deer season.
