How can the WDFW give permission to do something that's illegal? Why would someone even ask if they could hunt in a unit that is not open?

I would think an experienced hunter like Tod Reichert would know how to read and understand the hunting regulations. Not only that, but he had at least one local hunting with him, and that guy would have, or should have known, that unit 334 did not have any open season for branch antlered bulls, and therefore was not open for hunting with his raffle elk tag.

Since you know him, can you ask him to come on here and explain what happened?

One "local" came on here defending Reichert. This "local" is an outfitter in Kittitas County and offers guiding and consulting for Washington's specialty hunting draws.

If he was helping he should have known the rules.

This is not the first time this has happened, the other time was on the West side (totally different person and time). The process is in place where you notify the WDFW where you will be hunting.  There are several included in the notification chain.  How the criteria can be overlooked by all at the wdfw? (More than once ) Your guess is as good as mine.  Given the process and that it was followed, the fault lies with the department not the hunter.  Either good or bad, real cases are not tried in the court of Huntwa.

"Gossiping school girls"?   Really?  :chuckle:

You started this thread, just so we could gossip more, on a subject that has been dead and buried for a while now.

You know, even if it's true that Reichert had some WDFW employee tell him he could hunt in a closed unit, personally I don't believe that is enough to allow him to poach a trophy bull elk in some farmer's back yard.

Reichert is not new to hunting, he should know how to read the regulations himself. Its absolutely not a good excuse to say he was told he could hunt in that unit. I don't even believe he WAS told that, but just saying if he was, it's not a legitimate excuse.

If I called the WDFW and happened to get a hold of an employee who didn't know anything about elk hunting seasons, and I was told that I could hunt elk in March, could I go out today and shoot a bull and expect to get away with it? If not, how is that different than what you're saying happened in Tod Reichert's case?

By the way, speculating on this doesn't solve anything. What we need is for Reichert to get on here and tell us what actually happened.

Can you make that happen?
