Colorado Draw
« on: March 12, 2016, 05:25:41 AM »
Sounds like another pt for me this year.  I keep reading to much about winterkill.  Anyone still going to apply for deer?  It's hard to pass up the late dates for deer this year but I don't want to waste a bunch of pts if there is a winterkill.

Burning my 7 pts.  Weather is make or break on the West Slope and if anything like the last reset, the next two years will be killer.

Will be interesting to see how bad everything creeps this year with the later season.  LOTS of points only apps the last few years.  I think a lot of points are gonna get burned!  I'll be there for third season again.

I'm giving myself a 2 pt cushion to ensure that I have a tag.

I have 3 points this year. Here's what I was thinking. My bro-in-law had zero. We are thinking of putting in for a hard to draw unit first choice as a group and a easier draw with second choice. What do you guys think the odds of us drawing unit 41,42,421 as a second choice group app? We are going to this unit for elk anyhow I think but hoping to get lucky and have a bonus deer tag as well.

Colorado doesn't average your points out for a group. You get the same points as the lowest point holder in the group.

that's probably a pretty safe bet. Kind of what I'm thinking it will creep is well.

41 took at least one point to draw last year. Also they look at everybody's first choice before looking at second choices. So it looks like you have zero chance of drawing it as a second choice. Also if your partner has 0 and you have 3 you guys go into the draw with zero points.

That blows I missed the part where you have the low total points in the group. Oh well elk it is and we will probably see a giant buck we can't shoot.

You would draw if you applied with your 3 points as your first choice. But definitely not second choice or partners with somebody that has zero points.

I know I don't have a lot of points to burn but I don't think it's worth burn in my points on that unit. I hunted it 4 years ago and seen some nice bucks but overall I enjoyed the elk hunt there and want to hunt a better unit eventually.

I'm in!  Some areas got hit hard in the winter, others didn't, thankfully mine didn't.  Looking forward to heading to Colorado this fall.

I was going to try and go this year, but I've decided to plan on next year. I'll admit, I liked the later dates starting this year, but its only one day earlier next year.

The last reset was 2010.   I was there in 2010 and 2011, and 2011 was incredible.   The first couple of years give you the best chance at getting the white stuff; the white stuff is the make or break stuff.

You'll be fine.

How many points does it take for a mule deer hunt on public land where glassing opportunites are excellent? It doesn't need to be a rut hunt, and getting stuck in the snow makes me nervous.

Can you apply for a point without applying for a hunt this year?

BP: I can only speak to deer points. I pay $375ish and get back $325ish a few months later. So about $50 for a point. You have to pay upfront unless its changed.

I think they keep $40 unless you had a a license the prior year and $10 for the habitat stamp. It was $389 to apply this year.

My nephews will be drawing elk and deer tags in Colorado this year.  If the points do not jump too much.  They have been waiting for the season to be late where it can hit the rut.  We have consistently been taking really good bulls and nice bucks.  We do it all DIY and public land.
