military surplus shooters?
« on: January 27, 2009, 06:25:48 AM »
anyone else have a liking for old military mausers?

Im picking up an old Turkish Mauser tonight, cant wait to take her out to a range and blast papers.
Taking them apart and making them glisten in the sun is the fun part. used to get these really cheap everywhere, but lately im noticing the old milsurps skyrocketting in priced unbelievably.
$400+ in some cases.
At the gun show the other weekend, i seen beat down milsurps going for $600 where i wouldnt touch it for $100. shot out stove pipe barrels with NO rifling at all. I know they didnt make these with birdshot barrels lol!

The Turkish one i am picking up tonight is in Excellent shape and all i really have to do is clean cosmoline (yuck) and grease/oil it down again.

I bough a couple of K.Kale's Turkish Mauser, they are ok.  At gun show the Mausers are very expensive try these sites.

If you could find a VZ.24, K98, Argentine 1908, Brazilian 1908 just to name a few, these are best.

http://www.empirearms.com/

If you plan on working on your Mauser, you can get parts from MidwayUSA or this place

http://www.sporterexpress.com/

All my rifles a built on the Mauser action VZ.24 and the 1908 Brazilian

Keep an eye on www.aimsurplus.com

I've bought 4 guns from them.  2 K98's and 2 M48 yugo's.

If you need some info on removing cosmoline from the wood, hit me up.  I don't have the time to lay it all out but I did all the research when I got my first 98 and can pretty much give u the simplest route to getting yours squared away.

i just picked up a 1903 rearsenaled in 1938 Yurk. still filled with Cosmoline, its like its sweating it out lol!
I cant wait to dig into this rifle. i want a Scouting scope for it and thats all i will be doing to it. just need to buy that.

I will clean it well, bake the stock and get alot of the cosmo out of the wood too.
the wood only has a couple dings in it and well taken care of too.

I have never seen such high rifling in my life, looks as if it was stored right out of the arsenal.

You know those foam covers you use to cover plants in the winter?  Take one of those, and a clothes hanger.  Put the hanger through the foam so the stock can hang from it.  Then put a light in the foam and turn it upside down, it will heat it right up and sweat it out.  Do it a few times and then wipe any excess cosmoline off, and repeat.  Works like a charm.

yeah, i was also thinking my 1200 watt halogen lamp i just got at Home Depot would do that.
Wife wont let me use the oven, but after i dissassemble the rifle for cleaning i will create a makeshift oven and do something in that order.
I would also like to steam out a couple dings/indention in the wood while doing it. Wet cloth and an iron would also work on that though.
i was eyeballing a container at work. maybe it will go to the scrap yard. who knows.

all i know is i got me a Turk, been wanting one for awhile. also want a barreled action and trigger guard for a VZ-24 mauser so i can complete my very nice czech 7mm stock. need more $$ though. i want a custom barrel on it with a military look. maybe a 25-06 or the like. its just going to be a target shooter (long term project).

Don't worry about warping the board, take that powder cleaner that comes in the like green container with the cardboard sides/metal bottom and top(I cant remember the name) and hot water for short amounts of time and it will take any small knicks out but won't swell the wood enough to damage it.

It is easy to get hooked on those Mauser rifles, their simplicity, strength and it's history.

Yea, I love the Mauser action.  So sturdy and 10 times easier to remove the bolt than the Remington 700.  Love my remmy, but the mausers are fun to shoot.

I've done restoration work on 8 Mausers and countless mosin nagants now.  I have a thing for older rifles :)

Same guy also has a really nice Mosin he is willing to sell.
I need a large semi auto now though.  :mgun2:
Will have to get one fast though with idiot gun haters attacking our gubbinmint.  :mor:

and i also want a 9mm carbine hi-point but thats on the list also.

YES Uncle John.
My Name is Randy. I am a gunaholic. i only got this one because it has a very very nice finish and bore compared to many others i have seen. only wear on the rifle metals is where the wood doesnt cover it and the cosmoline was removed. its finish/bluing wore off.
Everything else looks brand new!

Hot soapy water works for me, but do it outside.
