Carter releases

Anyone somewhere in eastern Washington that keeps Carter releases on hand? My "wise guy" died on me in the middle of elk season last year but I had a backup release to finish my season with. I'm hoping to get my hands on a Whisper but I'd definitely prefer trying it out before dropping $200 on it to make it my primary release.

I know that's the cheap answer but was looking at getting a thumb trigger. You're not a very good enabler.

I've got a spot hogg whipper snapper up for sale it's a great release. The carter release are great too. I've switched to a carter backtenshion. I never found anyone that carries carter in stock close

Yeah, I know. I was just throwing the question up here in case anyone knew of a place. I was 80 percent sure I would just have to order it to try it before I started this thread.

If it is a thumb release for hunting I'm not sure how much you are going to like Carter.  Carter makes one of if not the best index releases for hunting, but their line of thumb releases aren't really hunting friendly.  To clarify, Carter is my release of choice.  I have about a dozen of them and shoot darn near all of them regularly.  But when it comes to thumb activated hunting releases I don't want to be put in a position where I have to quickly manage manual dexterity.  And all my Carter t-handles require some level of dexterity.  Whisper and Ember both do have exposed hooks, but IMO Trufire and Tru-Ball have done a much better job of designing t-handle releases for hunters.

NOTE: - Trufire is no longer a bargain release company with a long history of failures.  They are now part of the Feradyne Brands including Rage and Muzzy broadheads, nockturnal, Block targets, Apple, Sure-Loc, S4Gear...  Once a disposable release company is now fighting for premium status.  They are quite nice these days!

Tru-Ball on the other hand is and has always been a leader in hunting and target releases.  Some of the finest quality you will find anywhere!  I am a bit disappointed that the choices of 360 degree hunting jaws has been reduced.  But, that's just one of my pet peeves as I rotate t-handles as I draw and anchor thumb down.  Wouldn't bother many folks like it does me.  You should be able to find a model designed strictly for hunting that fits your style.  And sacrifice absolutely nothing.  Great products!!

It's been a while since I've played with a bunch of releases, last time I did I mainly remember the Carters I messed with had some fairly light and crisp triggers. Coming from a rifle background growing up, light and crisp are something that I just can't get out of my system for triggers. I much prefer the open hook releases for hunting as I prefer not to look at my bow when I connect my release to the D-loop ( I 4 fletch my arrows for the same reason, no cock vane to look for when nocking them ). When I would play thumb releases what was most comfortable to me was to anchor with my thumb in next to my and let the pressure of my pull through set the release off.

You know more of the archery world than I do (it's been a few years since I worked behind an archery counter) so perhaps you may know of a more fitting release for my style of shooting. I always have a Silver Horn hooked up to a Rip Shot in my pack should anything ever go wrong (like my Wise Guy dying on me), but I'm just looking to change things up with a thumb release. One of those "it ain't broke so I might as well fix it." situations in regards to just not getting another index finger release.

Crisp and quiet is tough to come by anymore.  To get real crisp and a hook the choices are quite limited.  If you use a longer D-Loop the Tru-Ball Fang is crisp and reasonably quiet.  Locks onto the D-Loop which is nice when caller is the shooter.  The Tru-Ball Absolute is crazy good, but is a little noisy.  Carter came out with the Whisper a while back that has a hook, crisp trigger and is quite quiet. But it is a hole for index finger release that can be trouble if using much in the way of a glove.  I've never liked the Carter Ember, but everyone is different.

I have a Tru-Ball BossX that is fantastic, but I don't think you can get the hook version like mine anymore.  If I'm correct they are now caliper only.  And it is noisy...especially right below your ear   When others shoot it doesn't seem so bad, but it seems louder than the bow when it's in my hand.  I have killed a couple elk with it and they didn't seem to mind.

I'm still on the search for my thumb release but have a bit of an update some of you will find entertaining.

While I'm still searching for a thumb trigger release for hunting, last week on another forum I came across a guy selling a Carter Honey 2 (thumb safety). It's been a long time since I've played with a hinge/back tension style release and for the sake of keeping boredom at bay I figured for $120 I wouldn't be hurting to much on it. Well I got it in the mail yesterday and seeing as the wind was a bit much I headed to Ranch and Home to use their range (they also have a little Mathew genesis with a pneumatic tube on it so I could adjust my release using that). I'd forgotten how unnerving this style of release can be getting use to but after an hour I was comfortable with it and really enjoying this release.

Now the part some of you will find funny (who says no one ever posts their stupidity up for the ridicule of the group) is that about half way through my little session I drew back, got anchored, took my thumb off the safety, and then I got a wicked little cramp in my elbow. No big deal, I put my thumb back on the safety and let back down, the only issue is that about a dozen or so hairs from my beard made in between my thumb and the safety. SOB it hurts to pull out that many hairs at once! I think after playing with this release for a few months I'll have a nice bald patch on the corner of my jaw and won't have to worry about it anymore.

Another option is the wrist strap RX-1 or quickie. Both very silent and crisp. Absolutely no creep. I have shot all of the releases. I prefer the carters . Personnel preference. All are crisp with no creep and very adjustable.. Give me a call if you want to discuss.

I'll definitely give you a call to pick your brain but in the interest of keeping the possibility of a group discussion going, might you have an opinion on the Sensation? I'm really a fan of the open hook design so I don't need to look at my D-loop when I hook my release to it and would like to go with a thumb trigger to change things up from the wrist straps. I have nothing against wrist straps but just looking to change up the style of release that I use.

If you are looking at the index finger style of the Sensation, but you don't want to look at the D-Loop why wouldn't you be looking at the Whisper? 

I am hoping that Carter will some day make the Insatiable with the same open hook and stealth of the Whisper.  I love holding on to the Insatiable.  Not sure there is another release out there that feels that good at full draw!  Unless maybe the Insatiable 2
