Is my dog learning to find sheds?
« on: March 22, 2016, 08:23:28 PM »
I kind of inherited my sons blue heeler when he moved out. I've been taking her to look for sheds with me this year. These dogs are pretty smart and will do anything for food. She's almost 7. Anyway, I found an old shed today. After letting her sniff on it and giving her pepperoni I sat my coffee down to use as a marker as I planned to do a little search around and see if I could find the match. 20 feet away she is standing there looking at me. Something catches my eye and she is standing between a pair of this years sheds! I gave her the benefit of the doubt (she got more pepperoni). She won't touch them though. So I'm not sure if it was just coincidence. I have noticed as we have been spending 2-10 hours a day in the field that once her paws toughened up, she seems to know what areas I'm headed toward (similiar smells maybe?) and she'll jump right into the blackberry thorns ahead of me. Anyone have any thoughts about this? Attached is the picture. She's looking towards a noise from something we bumped.

Well as a kid one of my first jobs was a ranch hand. The boss had a pair of healers.
The males name was Micky. When ever I started for the ranch truck he would jump in the passenger seat. Sit down and put his front leg on the arm rest.

I spent 100s of Hours driving that dog around the ranch. I swear he talked to me.

No idea if yours is shedding  but it would not surprise me. They are smart.

Especially when pepperoni is involved.
