Need some help from the reloaders on here
« on: January 29, 2009, 03:13:00 PM »
Ok, Reloader 19 powder is backordered nationwide from what I have been told. :bash:  I am having to work up some new loads.  Does anyone have any kick butt .338 win mag loads using a different powder?  We are using 210 gr. Partitions.

thanks

I dont currently load for a .338 but I have in the past. I looked up my loads in my log book. RL-19 gave me the best speed with 210gr. partitions and 210gr. barns X's. Second was IMR-4350. Both loads were accurate but the RL-19 load is 50fps to 75fps faster. I tried H-4831, IMR-4831, H-4350,IMR-4350 RL-15, RL-19,RL-22. I settled on a load with RL-19. Finding reloading components is spotty right now. Everyone's stock is way down but stock is trickling in so If you dont need the powder right now, I'd keep checking a few stores until they get some. I've got a list of components that I need and I check the local stores every Friday on my way home from work, I get a item or two each week. Last Friday was a good day at Lacey Cabela's and SW. I got a bunch of needed brass and bullets.

I have not loaded for a .338, but several 30 cal mags.  I am suprised you are getting max velocity and accuracy from R19 over the slower powders in that heavy of a bullet.  I would start out with a lot slower powder.  You also can't ignore what others have tried and found to work as there are some calibers that prefer some loads.  I try numerous powders (Have 24 different rifle powders on the shelf) before finding the one, but also start out with previously proven in a certain caliber.  Some times they work and sometimes they don't.

Reloader 19 does work very well in our rifles.  However, am always open to working up a new load..  ;)  I like the stress relief reloading brings me.  I may see what other powder I can use to get the performance I want.  I just received an email back from Alliant.  They have shipped 4 times the amount of powder than normal the last two months, and are doing the best they can to keep up with demand.

Thanks for all the info, may see what else I can find that works well.
